Course objectives

- Knowledge and understanding: Basic knowledge of the essential traits and evolutionary trends of EU internal market law, with particular attention to the origins and historical development of the internal market, the fundamental freedoms, the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, and competition law. - Applied knowledge and understanding: Ability to identify and apply the relevant sources of EU internal market law and the case law of the Court of Justice, for the purpose of solving practical cases or conducting research activities. - Independent discernment: Ability to critically engage with the main issues of EU internal market law and to navigate the complex framework of its legal sources and the relevant case law of the Court of Justice. - Communication skills: Ability to present the essential elements of EU internal market law using appropriate legal language and to grasp the logical and legal connections within the subject matter.

Course program
The European internal market: systematic framework. The social market economy. European Citizenship and non-discrimination principle. The freedoms of movement. The area of freedom, security and justice: general framework and relationships with the internal market. The Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).
Prerequisites
Knowledge of EU Institutional Law.
Books
Attending students' preparation will be evaluated on the basis of activities and topics treated during classes, as well as on the materials provided, plus the parts that will be indicated of the following volume: A. Arena, F. Bestagno, G. Rossolillo, Mercato unico e libertà di circolazione nell'Unione europea, Torino, last ed. For non attending students, the text is L. Daniele, Diritto del mercato unico europeo e dello spazio di libertà, sicurezza e giustizia, Milano, last ed.
Frequency
Attendance of the course is not compulsory, but recommended.
Exam mode
The final interview will be held in Italian. Knowledge of the normative sources of the internal market and their relationship with national sources will count for approximately 40% of the final evaluation. Knowledge of the case-law of the Court of justice of the EU and of the orientations emerging from official acts of other EU Institutions will count for approximately 40% of the final evaluation. The ability to understand the socio-political and ethical implications, on top of the legal ones, of the choices made by the institutional actors at all levels in the context of internal market law will count for approximately 20% of the final evaluation.
Lesson mode
The course will be essentially practical, based on the study of real cases. There will be both traditional and interactive lectures with training on concrete cases. Both institutional and archive sources will be consulted on-line throughout the course.
