Electrostatics in vacuum
Charges and fields. Coulomb’s law. Electric dipole. Gauss’ theorem. Divergence theorem. I Maxwell’s equation. Electric potential. Circulation of electric field. Stokes’ theorem. III Maxwell’s equation.
Electric fields around conductors.
Conductors and insulators. The general electrostatic problem and the uniqueness theorem. Coulomb’s theorem. Capacitance and Capacitors. Potential and charges on several conductors. Charge and voltage partitions. Energy stored in a capacitor.
Electric fields in matter.
Dielectrics. The moments of a charge distribution. The potential and field of a dipole. The torque and the force on a dipole in an external field. Atomic and molecular dipoles. Induced dipole moments. A microscopic view of the dielectrics. Polarization vector. The field of a charge in a dielectric medium. Poisson’s equation.
