Course program
Wastewater characteristics: pH, alkalinity, COD, BOD, TOD, TOC, nitrogen, phosphorus, surfactants, hazardous species (heavy metals, chlorinated organic compounds). Clean technologies and waste minimization. Treatment processes and design of unit operations. Balancing: flow equalization basins, mechanical/physical treatments: screening, settling, flotation, filtration, membrane permeation. Biological treatments: kinetics of biological processes, kinetic parameters of microbial growth, nutrients, oxygen transfer rate, aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic processes for carbonaceous substrate removal, nitrification, denitrification. Suspended-growth processes: activated sludge, oxidation pond, aerated lagoon. Attached-growth processes: trickling filter, rotating biological contactor. Physico-chemical treatments: precipitation, redox processes, coagulation-flocculation, adsorption onto activated carbon. Sludge treatment: thickening, stabilization, disposal.
Prerequisites
Natural and surface water characterization

Teaching mode
Front-end lectures and exercises.
Frequency
Face to face (unless otherwise specified by Sapienza)
Exam mode
Written test: two exercises on process calculation of reactors and treatment unit.
Oral test: five written open question on theoretical aspects of wastewater treatment processes.
Only students with 18/30 at the written test are admitted to the oral test.
Evaluation criteria for the written test: procedure correctness, numerical results accuracy, correct results interpretation.
The final grade is calculated by adding the written grade to the oral grade and dividing by 2.
