Course program
Notes on energy economics and policy. The concept of sustainability.
Brief notes on thermodynamics and thermotechnics (Direct and reverse cycles - Energy generation and conversion - Cogeneration - Trigeneration - Absorption machines - Air conditioning: concept of well-being, thermal loads). Examples of application of energy balances.
Biomass and bioenergy (Types of biomass - Availability - Production, treatment and logistics). Wind energy (Types of turbines – Environmental and economic aspects). Solar energy (Solar photovoltaic – Solar thermal – Environmental and economic aspects). Other renewable sources: Hydroelectric, Geothermal and Marine.
Hydrogen as an energy carrier (Production, treatment and logistics – Economic aspects). Fuel cells (Types – Stationary applications – Mobile applications).
Availability of renewable sources and their dispersed and intermittent nature. Concentrating thermosolar systems: parabolic, disc with Stirling engine, central receiver. Photovoltaic systems. Wind farms. Gas microturbines. Internal combustion engines. Stirling engines. Biomass micro-plants. Exploitation of geothermal and marine energy. Combination of renewable and non-renewable sources. Fuel cells. Thermal accumulators. Electric accumulators.
Electrical and machines and power electronic devices for the conversion of energy from renewable sources and for the management and control of power flows.
Modeling and simulation of renewable energy systems.
Use of renewable energy in buildings. Guidelines for the design of energy production and conversion systems based on renewable sources integrated into buildings in urban or rural contexts, for end uses such as electricity supply, heating, refrigeration and air conditioning. Thermal solar systems. Photovoltaic systems. Wind farms. Hybrid systems.
Notes on the main current legislation, energy saving, energy management.
Practical examples and case studies.
