Laboratory of simulation and optimization

Course objectives

The course aims at deepening the design, the implementation, the execution and the analysis of the results of discrete event simulation models. Particular focus will be on the use of specialized software packages and languages for discrete event simulation and their possible use in connection with optimization software. Students will be directly involved in laboratory activities and in particular in the implementation of real case studies. Knowledge and understanding: Techniques for implementing a discrete event simulation model. Use of software packages dedicated to discrete event simulation and their possible integration with optimization software. Applying knowledge and understanding: To be able to carry out a complete study of a real problem through discrete event simulation, from the preliminary analysis of the processes, the implementation, up to the interpretation of the results. Making judgements: Knowing how to identify the fundamental characteristics of a real process for the construction of a model of discrete event simulation. Knowing how to evaluate the impact of the output of a simulation on the real case in analysis. Communication skills: The laboratory activities will allow the student to learn communicating and sharing simulation models and their outputs. Learning skills: The laboratory activities will stimulate the students to the autonomous realization of simulation models, to teamwork, and to the concrete application of the techniques learned in the course.
