MODELING AND IDENTIFICATION

Course objectives

• The course aims to provide the student with basic and advanced statistical tools for the evaluation of performance and decision-making regarding the processes of production of goods and provision of services in the Economic-Management area. • The performance evaluation of a production / delivery system is based on the statistical analysis of the experimental data concerning the variables that define the characteristics of the product item (be it an object or a service) and the process variables from which they depend (explanatory variables). On the basis of this evaluation it is possible to decide whether the quality specifications are respected and possibly to compare the effects produced by possible intervention strategies aimed at improving them. The specific objectives concern: A) Knowledge and understanding: based on the notions of statistics acquired in the previous cycle of studies, define synthetic quality indicators of products / services, their estimation and validation from experimental data, in the articulated real situations that often do not totally fall into the teaching plans referred to by standard methods; B) Applying knowledge and understanding and C) autonomy of judgment: formulating and validating hypotheses on the aforementioned indicators that assure the adequacy of interventions or policies adopted in production / delivery processes aimed at improving their quality; the definition and identification of models that appropriately describe the relationships between the quantities of interest that influence the product of a process; the definition of dynamic models that describe the temporal evolution of the data for the prediction of the time series. D) Communication skills: the student will learn how to present and discuss the results of the analysis in a manner consonant with the interlocutor, so that the results can be easily understood and shared. E) Learning skills: a large collection of case studies to be discussed with the teacher during weekly receptions allows the student to develop autonomous capacity for analysis and solution of various problems related to the various aspects of management.
