International experiences
Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad — both within Europe and beyond — for short or long-term stays, thesis research abroad, and much more.
Study Periods in European Countries: Erasmus+
The Erasmus+ program promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions. It funds mobility for study purposes (SMS) in all disciplines and at all levels of study (including PhD programs), and supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
The Erasmus+ program allows students to attend courses and take exams abroad, with full recognition of the credits earned in their academic curriculum, or to carry out research abroad for the preparation of their Master’s or PhD thesis.
Internships in European Countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
The Erasmus+ Traineeship mobility program allows students to carry out internships at companies, training centers, or research institutions located in participating countries. The program offers the opportunity to undertake full-time internships abroad, which are recognized as an integral part of the student’s study program. The traineeship may also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection process takes place before the degree is awarded. The number of months spent on a traineeship can be added to those of study mobility periods, up to the maximum allowed by the Erasmus+ program.

Study Periods in Non-EU Countries: Overseas Program
Thanks to funding from the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) and additional university resources, Sapienza annually offers students the opportunity to spend a study period abroad — to take exams or conduct thesis research — at one of over 200 non-EU partner institutions with which bilateral agreements are in force. The Overseas Mobility Program provides a monthly grant of €700 net for the first five months, and €500 net from the sixth month onward. The stay abroad must be continuous, lasting no less than 90 days and no longer than two consecutive semesters. The grant may be awarded only once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza scholarships.

Study or Research Periods in Non-EU Countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM Program, funded by the European Commission, enables students and teaching staff to spend a period abroad for study, thesis research, teaching, or training in non-EU countries.
The program provides a scholarship and travel cost coverage.
All activities carried out abroad are academically recognized upon return, as specified in the Learning Agreement.
Student mobility periods may last from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 6 months, with the possibility of extension up to 12 months (the final 6 months under the Zero-EU Grant scheme, i.e. without a scholarship). The ICM scholarship also supports doctoral-level research mobility for the same duration. Travel costs are calculated using the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the student’s home university and the host institution.
