ITALIAN LITERATURE

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of ITALIAN LITERATURE, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. Getting an overview of the development of Italian literature; knowing some aspects of the relationship between Italian culture and European culture; thinking over the connection between literary narrative and the use of narrative in anthropology.

Course program
Dante poet and philosopher (Sonia Gentili) The course will focus on Dante’s Vita Nova and Convivio, in the Medieval cultural context. Boccaccio's Decameron and its sources (Luca Fiorentini) The course will be dedicated to the reading and commentary of Boccaccio's Decameron. Special attention will be given to the relationship that Boccaccio establishes with classical and medieval sources.
Prerequisites
Excellent knowledge of the Italian language. Familiarity with Classical literature and Italian literature, in particular from the Middle Ages.

Exam mode
Reading, paraphrasing and commenting on the text. To obtain a pass (18/30), it will be necessary to demonstrate a full grammatical understanding of the passages examined. The complexity and richness of the commentary will allow for higher marks. To obtain a mark of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all the topics covered in the course, being able to link them together in a logical and coherent manner.
