Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of MEDIEVAL ARCHAEOLOGY, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. Through the analysis of archaeological objects, the course drives to understand models of cultural interaction in the Middle Ages and to arouse autonomy in the research.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course aims to offer an overview of the Euro-Mediterranean Middle Ages read through material sources. The chronological path will be followed. Some case studies will be presented for themes and problems fundamental to medieval archaeology. Particular attention will be paid to the themes most discussed in current historiography. Guided visits to museums and archaeological sites will be among the lectures.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the main themes of Roman archaeology. Basic knowledge of roman and medieval history.

Frequency
Frequency is not binding, but highly recommended.
Exam mode
To pass the exam you the students achieve a grade of no less than 18/30. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered in the course, a basic knowledge of the problems of medieval archaeology and that he is able to explain them adequately. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to connect them in a logical and coherent way.
Lesson mode
The final exam is an oral exam about the topics of the lectures and the bibliography.
