LATIN LITERATURE

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of LATIN LITERATURE, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. The course intends to provide a basic knowledge of Latin language (morphology and syntax);competences in translation of the examined texts from Latin; some skills in exegesis of Latin texts; knowledge of the main authors and works of Latin literature.

Course program
The rural Italic landscape in Augustan poetry In addition to the analysis of the texts in the program, general outlines of the history of Latin literature will be provided, from its origins up to the second century. A.D.
Prerequisites
Students are required to have a basic knowledge of the Latin language, prosody and metrics (especially the hexameter), and a good knowledge of the general features of Roman history.
Books
To be studied in latin: a selection of texts from the authors mentioned in the program (photocopies provided in class). Complete reading, in Italian, of Virgil's Bucolics and Georgiche; to be prepared in Latin, with metric reading, Eclogues 1; 7; 9. Reference edition: Virgilio, Bucoliche, a cura di A. Cucchiarelli e A. Traina, Carocci, Roma 2012 (and subsequent reprints). A. Cucchiarelli, F. Ursini, Studiare latino all'università, Roma, Carocci 2024. Reccomended, for the history of Latin literature: P. Fedeli, E. Malaspina, L. Antonelli, Le parole di Roma. Storia della letteratura latina, Torino, UTET, 2023.
Teaching mode
The epithalamic genus will be studied in its Greek models, in Catullus, Virgil and in the Pervigilium Veneris.
Frequency
Students are strongly recommended to attend all lessons.
Exam mode
Oral exam at the end of the lessons, by mark expressed on a scale from a minimum of 18 (the threshold to pass the exam) to the maximum of 30 (cum laude).
