ARCHAEOLOGY AND POMPEIAN ANTIQUITIES

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of POMPEIAN ARCHEOLOGY………….…, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. The course will focus on the artistic and material culture of the city of Pompeii and the surrounding area.

Course program
The singular layer of ash and lapilli caused by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed many cities such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabia allowing their extraordinary conservation. The discovery of these sites and the recent excavations which have contributed to the new knowledge about this region will be the basis of the course. In particular, the investigation on public and private contexts in Pompeii has become one of the main topics in the scientific debate about the vesuvian site. Students attending this class will pursue a complete analysis of some monuments from archaeological data to reconstruction hypothesis, in relation to the town’s development. Students will also understand the latest news about one of the most required urban centres for archaeology scholars in the world.
Prerequisites
For the didactic activities foreseen by this course, no particular requirement is needed except those acquired during the study programme in Archaeological Sciences of the three-year Bachelor degree (or equivalent).

Main text: - F. Pesando, M.P. Guidobaldi, Pompei, Oplontis, Ercolano, Stabiae, Guide Archeologiche Laterza, Bari 2006. Further readings will be given at the beginning of the course and during the class.

The course will be carried out through lectures with ppt presentation and discussion.
Frequency
Attendance at the two scheduled weekly classes is strongly recommended but non-attendance programs will be available.
