Course objectives

Learning outcomes of the course unit The general objective of the course is to provide students with the cognitive and methodological tools to start a reflection on the Italian language and its historical evolution, its variability in relations with the social and cultural framework. Specific skills Knowledge and understanding At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the concepts foreseen by the course, basic knowledge and methodologies of Italian linguistics and sociolinguistics. Applying knowledge and understanding At the end of the course the student must be able to illustrate the origin and evolution of the Italian language and the main phenomena of historical grammar, the main phases of Italian language history, the contemporary Italian language and its variability, in particular the “diatopia” (Italian language / dialect / Italiano regionale). Making judgements The student will be able to move freely and independently between problems and topics related to Italian linguistic and sociolinguistics. Communication skills The student must know how to communicate the concepts of the discipline with clarity, propriety of language and using the technical terminology of the discipline. Learning skills At the end of the course the student will have to know how to use and find the tools to deepen and update (constantly and autonomously) the knowledge in the disciplinary area, according to his own interests and to the links with other disciplines. The student will also be able to deal, with limited research, topics for the final three-year degree project.
