Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of AEGEAN CIVILIZATIONS, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. The course concerns archaeological and philological studies on Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. The deciphering of Linear B (1952), the sillabographic system created during the II millennium by the Mycenaean palaces to write Greek language, opened a new line of research on Aegean topics to be added to archeology: the Mycenaean philology. Archeology and philology differ because of their methodologies and analytic strategies, but together they represent an essential and fundamental instrument of the study of the phenomenon of Minoan and Mycenaean civilization.

Course program
The course “Civiltà egee I” has two main targets: the first is represented by an archaeological introduction to the Late Aegean Bronze Age,. The second aim of the course deals with Mycenaean Philology, and it is composed by an introduction to the main writing systems of Aegean Bronze Age and an introduction to Linear B. The course will provide the student with the basic linguistic and philological instruments for the interpretation of Linear B tablets in their archeological, historical and linguistic contests
