LATIN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE III

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Latin Language and Literature, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. In particular, the course will provide students with some more advanced notions of Latin Language, Grammar and Literature, with particular attention to some study cases.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
We will read, translate and comment Suetonius’ lives of Caligula and Nero, with lectures ex cathedra, seminars of invited speakers, talkings of the students.
Prerequisites
Students are supposed to have an advanced knowledge of Latin language and Latin literature.

Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended.
Exam mode
The students will be asked to read, translate and comment two passages from Suetonius' lives of Caligula and Nero. In order to obtain the minium grade, 18/30, the student will have to translate correctly, and to provide a basic commentary. To get the maximum grade, 30/30 cum laude, the student will have to translate in a very good way, also stylistically speaking, and to provide a insightful commentary, with reference to other passages and sources on the topic.
