International experiences

Sapienza offers numerous opportunities to study, conduct research and undertake internships in Europe and beyond. These opportunities can be for short or long-term stays and include the chance to write your thesis abroad.

Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+
The Erasmus+ programme promotes transnational cooperation between higher education institutions and finances study mobility (SMS) in all disciplines and at all levels of study, including doctoral studies. It also promotes the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area. With Erasmus+, you can attend courses and take exams that will be fully recognised as part of your academic programme, or conduct research for your Bachelor’s or PhD thesis.

Internships in European countries: Erasmus+ traineeship
The Erasmus+ programme enables students to undertake training placements at companies, training centres and research institutes in participating countries. Students can undertake full-time internships abroad that are recognised as an integral part of their studies. Internships can also be completed after graduation, provided that the selection process is completed before graduation. The total number of months spent on the Programme and on Erasmus study periods is capped at the maximum allowed by the Programme.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding provided by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Sapienza University, students have the opportunity to study, take exams, or conduct thesis research at one of over 200 non-EU institutions with which Sapienza University has bilateral agreements. The overseas mobility grant is €700 net per month for the first five months, decreasing to €500 net from the sixth month onwards. The minimum stay abroad is 90 days, with a maximum of two consecutive semesters. This grant can only be used once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza grants.

Periods of study or research in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility Programme (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, enables students and faculty members to undertake study, thesis research or teaching/training periods in non-EU countries. It provides a scholarship and covers travel expenses. All activities undertaken abroad will be recognised by the relevant Sapienza faculty upon your return, as set out in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility can last a minimum of three to six months (extendable to a maximum of 12 months, with the final six months without a scholarship — the ‘Zero-EU Grant’). The ICM scholarship also covers PhD-level research mobility for the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the home and destination universities.

***Degree Programme Activities***
To raise awareness of student mobility programmes, such as Erasmus+ and CIVIS, the Degree Programme organises meetings for students throughout the academic year. Over the last two years, a dedicated day has been organised for Classics students. During this event, Professor Alessandro Vanzetti, the Erasmus+ and CIVIS programme coordinator, provides specific information about these programmes.
