International experiences

Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research and internships abroad: in Europe and beyond, for short stays or longer periods, thesis research abroad, and much more.
Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions. It funds student mobility for study purposes (SMS) in all subject areas and levels of education (including PhDs) and supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
The Erasmus+ programme allows students to attend courses and take exams — fully recognised in their academic curriculum — or to conduct research for their Bachelor's, Master's or PhD thesis.

Internships in European countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ mobility for traineeships allows students to undertake internships at companies, training centres or research institutes based in participating countries.
The programme enables students to carry out full-time internships abroad, recognised as an integral part of their study programme. Internships may also take place after graduation, provided that the selection process occurs before the degree is awarded. The number of mobility months is cumulative with those of Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum allowed by the programme.

European Alliance CIVIS, “A European Civic University”
Sapienza is a partner in the European Alliance CIVIS, “A European Civic University”, funded by the European Union and established in cooperation with the following universities:

  • Free University of Brussels

  • University of Tübingen

  • Autonomous University of Madrid

  • Aix-Marseille Université

  • National Kapodistrian University of Athens

  • University of Bucharest

  • Stockholm University

  • University of Glasgow

  • Paris Lodron University Salzburg

  • Université de Lausanne

The alliance has launched a variety of joint study programmes across the 11 European campuses, aiming to create a true European Higher Education Area and contribute to the development of a strong, multilingual European knowledge society.
Teaching is research-based and involves innovative educational activities, including — in addition to traditional Erasmus mobility — short-term mobility, also in virtual or remote format.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding from the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and its own resources, Sapienza offers students the opportunity each year to spend a study period abroad — for exams or thesis research — at one of over 200 non-EU institutions with which bilateral agreements are in force.
The Overseas mobility programme provides a monthly grant of €700 net for the first 5 months and €500 net from the 6th month onward. The stay abroad must be continuous, with a minimum duration of 90 days and a maximum of 2 consecutive semesters.
The grant can only be used once per degree cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza contributions.

Study or research periods in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility – ICM
The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, allows students and staff to spend a study/research period (for thesis work), or a teaching/training period, in non-EU countries. It includes a scholarship and coverage of travel expenses.
All activities carried out abroad will be recognised upon return by Sapienza's academic staff, as defined in the Learning Agreement.
Student mobility must last at least 3 months and up to 6 months (potentially extendable to a maximum of 12 months, with the final 6 months under the Zero-EU Grant scheme).
ICM grants also cover doctoral-level research mobility for the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator based on the distance between the home and host university cities.
