Objectives
The Degree Programme is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach that combines literary, artistic, socio-anthropological, historical-religious, and political-legal perspectives, aiming to provide a solid foundation in the field of Global Humanities. It is designed to offer a strong theoretical and methodological preparation both for entering the job market and for continuing studies in Italy or abroad. The programme, taught in English and clearly structured around an interdisciplinary framework, is based on the most recent approaches in humanities research from a global and transcultural perspective. It aims to equip students with the conceptual tools, research methods, and techniques necessary to understand the political and cultural processes of migration, interethnic communication, and transcultural mediation, in relation to global diasporas and the demographic dynamics of migratory flows.
One of the programme's educational goals is to enable students to work within public and private institutions, including organisations and associations operating in the fields of international cooperation and reception. Starting from the third year, students will develop a set of interdisciplinary methodological and cultural skills through an internship experience.
The programme is intended for both Italian and international students who are interested in understanding and studying the global transformation processes of contemporary societies, historical and art-historical studies from a renewed global and transnational perspective, the history of religions, anthropology, sociology, global and public health, and comparative legal studies.
The programme aims to train professionals capable of working in the field of transcultural mediation, in international organisations, and in public and private entities involved in migration and diasporas.
To this end, the goal of providing a global and interdisciplinary education is pursued through a three-year programme that allows students to acquire:
- research skills in history from a transcultural and heterological perspective;
- cultural, anthropological, and sociological skills relevant to interdisciplinary research;
- legal and economic knowledge.
The first year provides students with foundational training in different disciplinary areas such as methodology and sources of historical research, geography, literary and art-historical studies, and the fields of anthropology, law, economics, and sociology. The aim is to enable students to acquire the knowledge and competences defined for these educational areas, while at the same time gaining an essential understanding of the themes and issues of Global Humanities, along with the analytical methodologies and perspectives needed to build an initial set of interdisciplinary knowledge.
With the support of tutors and academic staff, students will be able to shape their study plan according to their specific interests (e.g., literary disciplines; art-historical disciplines; sociological and anthropological disciplines; legal disciplines), by selecting exams from the optional groups.
The acquisition of credits in the basic disciplines is thus conceived, due to its methodological and interdisciplinary nature, as preparatory to the in-depth study of core subjects during the second year.
In the second year, the educational objective is to deepen knowledge and competences in the programme’s core areas, mainly in history, philosophy, history of religions, political science, economics, and socio-anthropology. The number of exams and credits available in each area allows students to further explore their specific academic interests. The second year also includes the opportunity to choose one elective course.
In the third year, in addition to acquiring knowledge in related disciplines, students may freely choose courses that will complete and strengthen their study plan, based on their personal interests. For the related and integrative disciplines, students may opt to focus on areas such as human and international rights, global and public health, in-depth studies on the history and literary cultures of Africa and Asia, or on the history and culture of Europe.
The programme is completed by credits for other learning activities and the final thesis. A key educational role is played by the internship, designed as an opportunity to explore and engage with the professional world, and to apply the knowledge acquired during the course.
