ECONOMIC HISTORY
Course objectives
The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Course program
Course Topic: The evolution of the Italian economy and the North/South divide in the globalisations of the 20th century. Between history and historiography
Programme:
The aim of the course is to analyse the main features of the Italian economy and its internal gaps between the 20th and 21st centuries and the most recent historiographical updates on the subject, considering political, economic, social and institutional factors. Particular attention is placed on changes in the international context. Through a historical and historiographical key, the course analyses the characteristics and legacies of the Italian economy in the liberal period; the country's inclusion in the globalisation of the end of the century; the changes of the first post-war period and the economic policies of Fascism; the new international order and the choices of the second post-war period; the evolution of the Italian economy from the economic miracle to the crisis of the 1970s; the loss of competitiveness of the new globalisation; the innovations of the circular economy; the origins of the “southern question”; the public policies against the regional gaps before and after the birth of the Republic; the behaviour of economic and institutional actors; the effects of the “extraordinary intervention” for the Mezzogiorno; the territorial development strategies and cohesion policies in the last thirty years.

Exam mode
The examination is designed to verify and assess the student's learning, the conceptual and linguistic competence, the capacity for interpretation, synthesis and judgement on the course topics. The final vote can be between 18 and 30 cum laude (if lower than 18 it is insufficient).
On the basis of the course progress, it will be possible to organise intermediate written or oral tests, either individual or in groups, reserved for attending students.
Students participating in international exchange programmes may agree on a specific examination programme.
Lesson mode
Up-front classes; it will be possible to organise meetings with experts on the topics of the course programme.
