METHODOLOGY APPLIED TO THE EXCAVATIONS AND THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH ADVANCED

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of METHODOLOGY OF THE EXCAVATION AND ADVANCED ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. Advanced learning of the systems of classification and philological analysis of pluristratified contexts of the Classical World; quantitative and qualitative analyses; advanced knowledge of procedures to be applied in the reconstruction of the cultural phenomenon on the basis of the relation between archaeological evidence and other kinds of historical sources.

Course program
The course will be devoted to analyses and comparison of case studies aiming at the reconstruction and description of the changing urban and rural landscapes of ancient Rome, Italy and the Mediterranean area. Learning of: methods and procedures of classification (including ITC), philological analysis, methods and procedures of quantitative and qualitative analyses, methods and procedures of integration and reconstruction of architectural and archaeological context and of the cultural phenomena based on archaeological and historical evidence. - Part I: Introduction to the course. - Part II: Archaeology in context. - Part III: Dating and phasing. - Part IV: Data management.
Prerequisites
For the didactic activities foreseen by this course, no particular requirement is needed except those acquired during the study programme in Archaeological Sciences of the three-year Bachelor degree (or equivalent).
Books
Further readings will be given at the beginning of the course and during the class.
Teaching mode
The course will be carried out through lectures with ppt presentation and discussion.
Frequency
Attendance at the two scheduled weekly classes is strongly recommended but non-attendance programs will be available.
Exam mode
Students' evaluation will be based on specific knowledge (30%); active involvement in classes (20%); reasoning (30%); learning and communication skills (20%).
Lesson mode
The lessons will be held in the classroom with the help of ppt presentation. According to the situation will be organized specific visits and / or contributions of colleagues and professionals in the archaeological world.
