ADVANCED MEDIEVAL ART
Course objectives
The Course aims to offer students advanced tools for the analysis of medieval architecture in Italy and in Europe (from the 7th to the 14th century), through a theme-based and chronological cut that enables students to know and to understand the material so as to develop personal abilities and skills of reading, interpretation, connection between monuments and historical-artistic events.

Course program
The magister Riccardo da Lentini, the 'prepositus novorum ufficiorum' par excellence.
A Sicilian architect at the court of Frederick II Hohenstaufen.
From the youthful apprenticeship between the Sicily and the Empire (Strasbourg, Bamberg, Basel, Ebrach, Maulbronn etc.) to the practical act of the Gothic project:
the castra season in eastern Sicily (1234-1240: Castel Maniace in Syracuse; the warehouse of Augusta; the keep of Milazzo; Castello Ursino in Catania, Castello di Lombardia in Enna), the residences of Apulia (1241-1242: Lucera and Castel del Monte) and the "Terra Imperii" (1243-1248: the fortress of Monselice and the castle of Prato).
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of medieval architecture history.
Exam mode
Oral exam.
The assessment will take into account the learning skills acquired in class, on site inspections and during the study phase, as well as the communication skills and making judgements.
Lesson mode
The course consists of lectures and visits to museums and monuments.
