GREEK EPIGRAPHY

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Greek Epigraphy, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at providing students with the tools to assess the contribution of epigraphic studies to historical issues of ancient Greece.

Course program
The course will focus on aspects of ancient Greek economy. Students will acquire knowledge of Greek Epigraphy, focusing on the analysis of the epigraphic evidence, by increasing their understanding of ancient evidence, especially of the epigraphic documents. By studying and discussing the epigraphic sources, they will be enabled to interpret and interrelate them and use them to construct historical narratives. The course will tackle the historical and epigraphic issues by applying the knowledge and understanding of ancient sources and will lead the students to make their own judgements on this basis. They will also display their newly acquired skills in presenting a short paper on an epigraphic text among the ones tackled by the course, at the meantime showing their learning skills in discussing ancient epigraphic evidence with the instructor during the lessons.
