ROMAN ANTIQUITIES AND INSTITUTIONS - ADVANCED COURSE II

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Roman Antiquities and Institutions, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at providing students with competence on the basic tools for research in the field of Latin epigraphy and Roman institutions and knowledge of the main fields of research with deepening of methodological skills.

Course program
Aspects of Roman Public and Private Religion. Rituals and Festivals of the Month of March through the Reading of the Third Book of Ovid’s Fasti. The lessons, structured as seminars with the formation of study groups, will be complemented by visits to the epigraphic collections of the Antiquarium Comunale del Celio and Museo Nazionale Romano. Good knowledges of Latin and Roman history

Frequency
Due to the seminar nature of the module, attendance is recommended. Non-attending students will study the texts indicated in the bibliography for the exam.
Exam mode
Oral exam on books and discussion of the written results of the epigraphic seminar; verification of the acquisition of expected learning oucomes. To pass the exam students must get a grade of not below than 18/30; students must demonstrate to have acquired a sufficient command of course topic. In order to achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, students must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all course topics, and to be able to connect them in a logical and consistent way.
