German Literature - Advanced Course

Course objectives

A) Acquisition of a solid work methodology (critical analysis of current bibliographies, ability to work directly on literary texts, case studies) in relation to most recent research directions. B) Knowledge of canonical and non-canonical stages of literary history, of the keygenres in a culture/tradition, of fundamental issues of the period(s) in exam.

Course program
Ernst Jünger: a writer in the German century This article aims to retrace the intellectual journey of Ernst Jünger (1895-1998), focusing in particular on the connection between literature and politics in his work, as expressed in two profoundly different writings: a fantastical novel written as a veiled criticism of the Nazi regime, and a post-war reflection on the role of the intellectual in the changed ideological landscape of the 20th century.

Frequency
Attendance, although encouraged, is entirely optional.
Exam mode
In addition to the usual oral exam, it is advisable to make presentations in class on individual topics, which will result in specific assessments, with the function of exempting parts of the final exam, to be agreed with the teacher. To pass the exam you must achieve a vote of not less than 18/30. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must instead demonstrate that he has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to link them in a logical and consistent way.
Lesson mode
Classes will follow the normal lecture format. However, depending on participants' preferences and the schedule, students are strongly encouraged to participate in plenary presentations on individual topics agreed upon with the instructor.
