Dutch and Flemish Translation - Advanced Course

Course objectives

This course aims to bring students to a high level of translation theory and practice. These scientific skills, applied to specific texts, are meant to cultivate the ability to develop a thesis on a topic chosen in the field of linguistics (also contrastive) or translation. Proficiency in the written and oral skills in Dutch and Flemish language aimed at reaching at least the C1 level.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course comprises a course given by the Professor and the language activities by the Dutch language lecturer. The course given by the Professor in the first semester focuses on the development of the Dutch language studied through the translation and analysis of literary and non literary texts . The Dutch language lessons held in the two semesters will deal on an advanced level with morphology and syntax, reading , writing, listening, and translation (N-I, I-N) in order to attain a B2/C1 level.
Prerequisites
Having passed the tests and exams required for the subject in the bachelor course
Books
For the course imparted by the Professor: Texts and articles provided by the professor; U.Eco, Dire quasi la stessa cosa (Bompiani); Marinyssen-Jannsens, Het Nederlands vroeger en nu (Acco 2008). For the Dutch language lessons: Kitty Eerdmans, Grammatica della lingua nederlandese, 2 voll., Niederzier 1986.
Teaching mode
The course held by the Professor in the two semesters includes traditional lessons, analysis and translation of texts in the classroom, and possibly lectures held by other academics. The lessons held by the Dutch language teacher in the two semesters include writing, oral production and listening. The students can also practice, after being directed by the teacher, with the help of material uploaded on the e-learning platform.
Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory.
Exam mode
At the end of the courses imparted by the Professor and by the Dutch language lecturer the students are required to take both an oral exam and a written test. In the oral exam they have to answer questions and discuss subjects treated by the Professor in her course and contained in the reading list. The written test deals with the language abilities developed and consists in: dictation exercise, fill in or multiple choice questions, translation. The results of the two tests merge in the final mark. To pass the exam the mark has to reach 18/30. the student has to show he/she has reached a sufficient knowledge of the subjects treated by the Professor in her course and in the reading list, a basic knowledge of the subjects treated by the Dutch lecturer in his lessons and to be able to answer correctly at least at 50% of the questions contained in the written test. To obtain a full mark (30/30 e lode), the student has to prove his/her excellent knowledge of all the subjects treated in the courses, and his/her ability to establish coherent and logic connections between them.
