Course objectives

Educational goals: learning outcomes and competences to be acquired The educational goal of the module can be summed up in understanding the concept of health and prevention and its application in Community Medicine and Dentistry. At the end of the course students must have the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and clinical criteria in preventive and community dentistry, defined as "the science and art of preventing dental disease, promote oral health and improve the quality of life through joint efforts of society as a whole". At the end of the course students must have the practical skills of correctly communicating with patients in medical history interview, performing a basic oral health examination, calculating the major oral health community indices, individual caries risk assessment. The training sessions will be divided into a pre-clinical phase - with the aim of laying the foundations for a cultural learning process with prevention-oriented introduction to statistical and epidemiological methodology, instrumentation, materials and techniques with emphasis on preventive outpatient basis in the doctor-patient communication - and a clinical phase - with the issues of preventive and community dentistry integrated with specific expertise in the individual dental disciplines.

Generalities and Clinical Features of the Healthy Individual Anatomy and physiology of the stomatognathic system; characteristics of a healthy oral cavity. Principles of Dental Diagnosis Interpretation of clinical signs and classification of dental and gingival pathologies. Sterilization and Disinfection Procedures in the Clinic Operating protocols, waste management, and biological safety. Knowledge of Dental Materials – Theoretical Aspects Classification, physical–chemical properties, and biocompatibility of dental materials.
