Course objectives

General Objectives of the integrated course Clinical Psychology In the Clinical Psychology module, students should acquire scientific EB knowledge on the main psychological and psycho-social processes relevant to health, to develop positive relationships with patients, to manage treatments and health care through a patient-centred and Inter-professionally oriented biopsychosocial approach. Specific Objectives of the integrated course Clinical Psychology To promote interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaborations, the module aims to provide students with basic current knowledge on the functions of the mind, on the main individual and personality characteristics, and on the most relevant psycho-social processes for the promotion and protection of health in clinical medical settings. At the end of the course the student will have to: a) know the main psychological processes (perception, emotions, attention, learning, memory, language, conscience, reasoning) relevant to the activity of doctors and other health professionals; b) understand the role of subjective factors in the evaluation of cases and of the treatment effects; c) recognize the relevance of subjective well-being and health behaviours; d) know some psychological theories and constructs relevant for the implementation of the intentions for behavioural change and for self-regulation; e) possess psychological and psychosocial knowledge and skills that can be used in communicating with patients and their families, with particular reference to the clinical setting and to the promotion of health care and behaviour; f) know the stress and its connections with the diseases, the burn out and the principles for stress management; g) know the main orientations of psychoeducational interventions, counselling, and psychotherapies.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The first part of the course will be dedicated to introducing Psychology as the science of mind and behaviour, as well as the specific field of Clinical Psychology. It will also be described the figure of the Psychologist and of the Clinical Psychologist and will be highlighted their peculiarities compared to other professionals and operators working in the field of mental health (eg. counsellor, psychiatrists, psychotherapists). This part will also cover research methods and will introduce the perspective of evidence-based practice in psychology. In the second part of the course, the functions with which the mind represents the self, others and the world are presented. The lessons will include studies and theories on the main cognitive (e.g. attention and memory), emotional (e.g. emotions, emotional regulation, mood) and motivational processes (e.g. needs, purposes, values). The third part of the course will be dedicated to the introduction of psychological assessment (i.e. psychodiagnostics) with particular reference to the context of psychopathology. The fourth part of the course will be presented the main psychological theories on mental disorders and psychotherapy approaches, with particular attention to evidence-based approaches. The final part of the course will deal with the theories of psychological well-being.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of psychology.
Books
At the beginning of the course, the professor will provide all the study material to attend the lessons and pass the exam. The material consists of lectures slides, scientific articles, sample reports, guidelines, normative documents, etc. Moreover, the list of scientific articles and individual chapters is available on the companion course-site on elearning https://elearning.uniroma1.it.
Teaching mode
Lectures with presentations and critical analysis of scientific texts.
Frequency
Attendance is mandatory. The course is intended to be completed when the student has attended at least 70% of the lesson hours.
Exam mode
The evaluation consists of an oral and/or written exam on the exam topics.
