Education in the Nursery

Course objectives

Education at the nursery school The course is aimed at analysing all players who are fundamental for the educational project of the nursery school (children, parents, teachers and service coordinators) and the methodological elements typical of this profession. All topics will be examined from both a theoretical point of view, presenting the concerning theoretical debate, and a practical one, through a presentation and a critical analysis of operational tools. At the end of the course, the student will (Knowledge and understanding):  know the main points of the pedagogical debate on the planning and evaluation in the educational field;  critically recreate the contemporary pedagogical debate regarding childhood education;  know the main observation tools for educational relationships in the childhood services. At the end of the course, the student will be able to (Skills to acquire):  use different observation tools for educational contexts and for self- and hetero-evaluation on the quality of childhood services;  document, using several kinds of language, the educational projects and experiences;  use critical and self-critical knowledge and skills needed for planning and realizing educational interventions for children aged 0-3 years;  plan, document and evaluate educational contexts for childhood;  develop a critical and autonomous mind-set on the learned contents.

Course program
Module 1: Quality Standards in Early Childhood Educational Services from a European Perspective This module introduces students to quality standards in early childhood educational services, examining the European regulatory framework and the guidelines governing services for children aged 0 to 3 years. Module 2: Life in Services and Focus on Spaces, Schedules, Activities, and Relationships The second module explores daily life in early childhood educational services, focusing on educational and organizational aspects. Students will learn to design appropriate educational spaces, manage schedules and activities, and build effective relationships. Module 3: Educational Planning and Continuity 0-6 The third module focuses on educational planning and continuity between early childhood services and preschool. Students will learn to design coherent educational plans and facilitate the transition of children from 0 to 6 years through a vertical curriculum.

Exam mode
Students will be assessed with an oral exam at the end of the course. The evaluation will follow the following criteria: - In-depth knowledge of all topics presented in the three modules; - Use of specific terminology; - Ability to personally rework the themes; - Ability to connect the presented topics; - Quality of the oral presentation.
