INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND DIGITAL DIPLOMACY

Course objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with the appropriate tools to learn from the historical, sociological and geopolitical point of view the international relations of the contemporary world Knowledge and understanding: first objective of the course is to strengthen the knowledge and skills related to the sociology of political phenomena acquired during the three-year degree, with specific reference to the dynamics of international level and to global political actors Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the course's second objective is to transmit the practical skills to set up and carry out surveys that extend to the context of international relations in order to monitor and understand the global level dynamics underway in the system of contemporary international relations Autonomy of judgment: Another specific objective of the course is the ability to analyze and reflect independently on the contents of the texts and on the topics discussed in class to be submitted to the common reflection of the class. Communication skills: Alongside all the objectives, the course aims to develop communication skills on the research paths on the relational dynamics between the states and on the global phenomena of the system of contemporary international relations. Learning skills: lectures and practical exercises aim to convey the ability of students to study, deepen and re-elaborate the study materials in an autonomous way. Expected results: It is hoped that the student at the end of the course will be able to independently set up a critical analysis of the dynamics of international relations as well as to work in monitoring and collecting data and information on the specific dynamics of international relations using data quantities, historical comparative method and social network analysis

Course program
The course is structured into three main sections, interconnected by a cognitive path that will cover various topics and problems, with a focus on specific issues: a) Themes and scenarios of international relations. Some theoretical and conceptual knots regarding the functioning of the international relations system, international politics, and geopolitics will be introduced. b) Specific aspects of the history of the international system after the end of the Cold War and contemporary international security. This section will analyze issues related to the various phases of transformation of the geopolitical framework after the fall of the Berlin Wall with specific reference to the rise of New Wars, the phenomenon of international terrorism, and conflicts in the contemporary period. c) Foundations of international political communication. Some theoretical and conceptual knots of international political communication and media diplomacy (Vietnam Syndrome, CNN Effect, and its derivatives) and international political communication in the Internet era (digital diplomacy) will be introduced. This section will analyze the importance of online information and counter-information techniques and the effects connected to the advent of SNS; subsequently, the impact of online activism and the formation of informative mixes based on the fusion of online and offline technologies will be studied. This section will also analyze the consequences of using fake news in international relations. The course is closely linked to the adopted texts. All texts are addressed in class.

Lectures useful for achieving mastery of vocabulary and research strategies in the field of international relations. Simulations and in-depth analysis, aimed at the acquisition of methodological and political skills and the management of the main data collection and analysis techniques used to monitor and study the most relevant international issues.
Frequency
Attendance is strongly recommended but not mandatory.
Exam mode
Assessment The exam is oral and is designed to assess students’ adequate command and awareness of the areas of study, terminology, and main analytical strategies in the field of international relations. The examination aims to evaluate: the level of understanding of the fundamental concepts of the discipline; the ability to navigate various research designs in relation to the stated objectives; critical thinking skills and the capacity to draw connections between the texts studied. The oral exam will also assess the student’s ability to analyze and reflect independently, as well as to competently apply acquired knowledge to issues related to the main challenges of the international relations system.

Teaching Methods Lectures aimed at developing mastery of the terminology and research strategies in the field of International Relations. Simulations and in-depth sessions designed to support the acquisition of methodological and policy-related skills, as well as the ability to manage the main techniques for data collection and analysis used to monitor and study relevant international issues.
