Course objectives

Learning objectives The aim of the course is to build and/or improve students’ competence in workplace, corporate, and institutional discourse. In particular, the focus of the course is on the theoretical knowledge, skills, and strategies needed to communicate in business contexts at multiple levels and across various genres and types of written and spoken texts in English. Students will be working on the analysis and on the production of different types of business texts both written (e.g. press releases, CVs, memos) and spoken (e.g. business meetings, job interviews, communication dynamics) with the aim of consolidating the acquired knowledge and experimenting its application. Specifically we will focus on the specialized language of corporate and institutional texts, their structures, audiences, and purposes. By the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired awareness of workplace discourse, its norms, and practices. They will also be able to show a working knowledge of the topics dealt with during the semester. It is expected that students will use English at the C1 level in both speech and writing.

Turner, Oxford University Press Learning objectives: The overall objective of the course is to build and improve students' skills in workplace discourse, in corporate and institutional contexts. The course focuses on the theoretical knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to communicate in corporate contexts at multiple levels and through various genres and types of written and spoken English texts. Students will work on the analysis of different types of business texts, both written (e.g., cover letters, CVs) and oral (e.g. business meetings, job interviews), with the aim of consolidating the knowledge acquired during the course. The focus will be on the specialized language of business texts, their structure, audience, and purpose. By the end of the course, students should have gained an awareness of workplace language, its norms, and practices. Overall goals: Students are expected to: 1)Describe cross-cultural experiences, report back on research, use tenses appropriately, introduce themselves to a group. Past and perfect tenses. 2)Talk about career paths, manage the discussion in a meeting and share ideas. 3)Discuss working practices, give a formal presentation, speculate about future changes- future tenses 4) Write a cover letter following a specific structure. The cover letter is part of the esonero done during the middle of the course. 5)Talk about team relationships, deal with conflict in negotiations, respond to feedback. Adding emphasis and inversion to stress the meaning 6)Talk about training and learning, use communication strategies on the phone, use participle clauses and “the future in the past” appropriately. 7)Express dissatisfaction, talk about employer/employee expectations, deal with difficult questions. 8)Talk about resources, discuss options and reach decisions in meetings, use conditionals effectively, deal with misunderstandings. 9)Talk about leadership styles, negotiation, distancing from information. Distancing verbs 10)Talk about persuasion, give a presentation to sell an idea, use discourse markers appropriately, give and respond to compliments. Language proficiency: ability to understand complex texts and speeches also with interactive activities: Ted Talks, films, podcast. Talking about current affairs. Grasping nuances and implicit meanings. Fluent communication: ability to express oneself spontaneously and confidently on a wide range of topics.
Prerequisites
It is essential that those who choose to attend the advanced English for Corporate Communication course have a solid B1/B2 level in order to be able to cope with the course content. The exit level is C1.

Frequency
Attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended as this is an advanced level (C1).
Exam mode
During the course, there will be an exemption in which students will be required to write a formal text of approximately 150-200 words (a cover letter). The oral exam will be in pairs and will focus on the contents of the adopted text and the topics covered during the course. You will be assessed on: Fluency, grammar, accuracy of word choice, choice of formal and informal register, analysis of a business text.
