Colonialism Post-Colonialism and Heritage – Ancient Near Eastern Studies

 

The course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of the relationship between Colonialism and Postcolonialism on one hand and Ancient Near Eastern studies as an academic field that embrace archaeology, philology, and history on the other. The first part of the course introduces the history of Near Eastern archaeology and its methods, from colonialism to post-colonialism. The second part explores case studies attaining to different regions of Near Eastern countries, from Mesopotamia to the wider Mediterranean. Particular attention will be devoted to the use of primary sources, both published and unpublished.

The class is taught in English.

 

This is a 3-credit course (3CF). Students will attend the first 11 classes of the course Anthropology of Religion (Prof. Emily Pierini), then they will complete the additional 3-credits by attending the present course Colonialism, Post-Colonialism and Heritage in Near Eastern Studies which will be held in the 2nd semester.

 

Exams

Oral exam to be booked on Infostud as part of Prof. Silvia Alaura’s course on Colonialism, Post-Colonialism and Heritage in the Near-East (2nd semester). The assessment will consider the ability to critically evaluate and compare the main ideas and theories from the course and the bibliography.
