Fisica I - Ingegneria Aerospaziale - Canale 2 - 2025
Il Corso di Fisica I per il canale L-Z inizierà Lunedì 24 Febbraio alle ore 14:00 in Aula 16 (RM006) secondo il calendario ufficiale.
Physics of Liquids - Department of Physics
Lessons start Wednesday 26th February at 10:00 in Aula Rasetti (Old Physics Building).
The purpose of the Physics of Liquids course is to present classical liquid theory, and its educational goals are to introduce the main statistical mechanics techniques that have been developed for the study of disordered classical systems. The course covers both the statics of liquids, i.e., the problem of how to approach the calculation of thermodynamics for interacting systems, and the dynamics, i.e., the problem of characterizing fluctuations and behavior in the linear regime. A brief synopsis of the course is:
*) review of statistical mechanics
*) mean-field theories (e.g., van der Waals)
*) virial expansion with diagrammatic methods
*) theory of thermodynamic functionals, including Density Functional Theory
*) integral equations for liquids and classical closures
*) perturbation theory
*) introduction to critical phenomena
*) scattering experiments in liquids
*) correlation function theory
*) molecular hydrodynamics
During the course, we conduct some numerical exercises to practically illustrate certain topics covered in the lectures.
There is no written exam; however, students can prepare a short essay on a topic to be agreed upon, which will reduce the weight of the oral exam.
The recommended textbook is Theory of Simple Liquids by Hansen and McDonald.
