News

In the 2025/26 academic year, Prof. Zappettini is the lecturer for the following courses:

  • English Language and Communication (L36 Bachelor's degree 6 CFU)
  • English Language and Linguistics (LM52/62 Master's degree 9 CFU)

Each course is divided into a monographic component (taught by the Professor) and a language practice component (taught by lecurers).

Monographic Courses
Courses begin the first week of the academic year (22/9/2025) and will be held for 12 weeks with the following schedule:

  • L-36: Thursday 18-20 (Classroom A); Friday 12-14 (Classroom A)
  • LM-52/62: Wednesday 18-20 (Classroom T01), Thursday 8-10 (Classroom T01), Friday 14-16 (Classroom T01)

The courses focus on the use of the English language in the specific contexts of politics and international relations. Therefore, the courses will analyze specific examples related to the use of English in political, institutional, diplomatic, and mass communication fields from a linguistic and pragmatic-discursive perspective.
Interactive activities are planned, so using a laptop or tablet is highly recommended (phones are not suitable).
To follow the monographic course lectures, you must enroll in the following Google Classroom courses:

  • hzlodbbb (L36 Bachelor's degree)
  • ra35f3jv (LM52 Master's degree)

Note: To access Classroom activities, you must use institutional uniroma1.it credentials and not personal accounts. A good portion of the teaching material provided during lectures is uploaded to Classroom; however, the platform is supplementary and does not replace in-person lectures.

IMPORTANT: It is a prerequisite that students have adequate language skills at the course delivery levels (B2 and C1 for Bachelor's and Master's degrees, respectively). Therefore, at the beginning of the course, students will have the opportunity to check their language level through a test. The test is for the benefit of students who attend the lectures, to help them choose the most suitable language practice level to attend (basic or advanced). Students who cannot or do not intend to take the test can self-evaluate and assign themselves directly to a suitable language practice level. Non-attending students are responsible for their own language skills and must work independently with the materials in Classroom.
The language level tests will be held on Friday, 26/9 at 12:00 (Bachelor's) and 14:00 (Master's). Further information about the test format will be provided during the first lecture.

Language Practice (Lettorati)
The language practice courses begin on 29/09/25 and continue throughout the academic year.
For course times and details, please consult the lecturers' pages:

Exam Format
Both Bachelor's and Master's exams consist of a written part and an oral part that must be taken during the same exam session (typically two days apart). You must pass the written exam to access the oral exam. The written test includes listening and reading exercises based on which students must complete comprehension activities (true/false; multiple-choice; gap-filling; spelling). For the oral part, students discuss three topics as follows:

  • Bachelor's: 1 topic from the monographic course + 1 topic from the language practice component + 1 text of the student's free choice (on a political theme).
  • Master's: 1 topic from the monographic course + 1 topic from the language practice component + 1 linguistic analysis of a political text of the student's free choice (demonstrating the application of the theoretical linguistic concepts taught in the monographic course).

Exemptions
Holding a recently obtained Cambridge or IELTS certificate (maximum two years old at the date of the exam) may entitle you to a partial exemption from the exam. Certificates equivalent to the course exit levels are typically considered sufficient for the exemption:

  • L36 Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages = Cambridge First Certificate (starting from 160) or IELTS (starting from 6.0).
  • L52/62 Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages = Cambridge Advanced Certificate (starting from 180) or IELTS (starting from 7.0).

A digital copy of the certificate must be sent to the lecturer at the start of the course, who will approve the possible exemption.
