BACHELOR'S DEGREE (LAUREA TRIENNALE)
ISTITUZIONI DI STORIA DELLA LINGUA ITALIANA (12 CFU) for Lettere Classiche
The course is divided into two 6-CFU modules taught by the same professor: Istituzioni di storia della lingua italiana A
and Istituzioni di storia della lingua italiana B. The two modules take place in the first and second semester respectively and are designed as parts of a single unified program. In the first part, after an introduction to the discipline (2 hours), the course will cover the following topics:
a) Elements of Italian historical grammar (20 hours);
b) Historical profile of the Italian language from its Origins to the 16th Century (20 hours).
The topics for the second part are as follows:
a) Historical profile of the Italian language from the 17th Century to the 2000s (20 hours);
b) Monographic in-depth study: Language and style of Dante Alighieri's Inferno (22 hours).

Assessment Methods
The final exam (12 ECTS) covers both modules of Istituzioni di storia della lingua italiana
(A and B) taught by the professor. It is not possible to take only one part of the exam.
To pass the exam, students must achieve a grade of at least 18/30. To achieve a passing grade, the student must demonstrate a basic knowledge of the course contents; to achieve the maximum grade (30 cum laude), the student must demonstrate the ability to confidently present the topics covered using appropriate terminology, and must also show the ability to connect different parts of the syllabus in a coherent and logical way.
A written partial exam (esonero) on the Italian Historical Grammar section is scheduled for January.
Notes
The course is restricted to students of the Bachelor's Degree in Lettere classiche.

MASTER'S DEGREE (LAUREA MAGISTRALE)
STORIA DELLA LINGUA ITALIANA (12 CFU) for the Master's Degree in Filologia moderna
The module is taught in the first semester by Prof. Motolese and in the second semester by Prof. Iocca.
The module aims to provide knowledge of the main investigation methods in the history of the Italian language through the in-depth study of specific research topics. By the end of the course, students must demonstrate that they have: a) developed an initial capacity for independent research in the historical-linguistic field; b) made appropriate and critical use of the bibliography; c) acquired the ability to adequately convey their research results.
In the a.y. 2025-26, the course will be dedicated to the language of the Renaissance. The first part – taught by Prof. Motolese – will focus on the first edition of Pietro Bembo's Prose della volgar lingua
(Venezia, 1525); the second part – taught by Prof. Iocca – will focus on epistolary writing between the 15th and 16th centuries.

The module aims to provide knowledge of the main investigation methods in the history of the Italian language through the in-depth study of specific research topics. By the end of the course, students must demonstrate that they have: a) developed an initial capacity for independent research in the historical-linguistic field; b) made appropriate and critical use of the bibliography; c) acquired the ability to adequately convey their research results. In the a.y. 2025-26, the course will be dedicated to the first edition of Pietro Bembo's Prose della volgar lingua

METODI E PROBLEMI DI STORIA DELLA LINGUA ITALIANA (6 ECTS/CFU)
for the Master's Degree in Scienze storiche
The module aims to provide knowledge of the main investigation methods in the history of the Italian language through the in-depth study of specific research topics. By the end of the course, students must demonstrate that they have: a) developed an initial capacity for independent research in the historical-linguistic field; b) made appropriate and critical use of the bibliography; c) acquired the ability to adequately convey their research results. In the a.y. 2025-26, the course will be dedicated to the relationship between holographs (autographs) and the history of the Italian language from the Renaissance to the modern era.

Matteo Motolese (Roma, 1972) è attualmente Direttore del Dipartimento di Lettere Culture moderne per il triennio accademico 2025-2028. Professore ordinario di Linguistica italiana, è autore di saggi sulla storia dell'italiano dal Trecento sino al Novecento con particolare riguardo alla lingua letteraria, alla codificazione grammaticale e al rapporto tra filologia e storia della lingua italiana. Ha curato, insieme a Giuseppe Antonelli e Lorenzo Tomasin, Storia dell'italiano scritto (Carocci 2014-21, 6 voll., Premio Pavese per la Saggistica 2021). Ha diretto, insieme a Emilio Russo, il progetto Autografi dei letterati italiani (Salerno Editrice, 7 voll., 2009-26) di cui è disponibile anche una versione digitale (www.autografi.net). È membro della direzione di "Lingua e Stile" (Classe A), del comitato scientifico del "Bollettino d'Italianistica" (Classe A) e di "Autografo" (Classe A). Dal 2018 è tra i docenti del Master di Lingua, letteratura e civiltà italiane dell'Università della Svizzera Italiana di Lugano. Dal 2021 è Socio nazionale dell'Accademia Nazionale dell'Arcadia. Collabora con il supplemento culturale del «Sole24ore».
Ha ricoperto, negli anni, le seguenti cariche accademiche: Presidente di Corso di Laurea (2007-2009), membro della Giunta di Facoltà (2013-16), membro della giunta di Dipartimento (2013-16; 2023-25), vicedirettore del Dipartimento di Studi greco-latini, italiani, scenico-musicali (2015-18), membro della Commissione Ricerca d'Ateneo (2016-18), coordinatore del Dottorato in Linguistica (2021-24). Nel 2010 è stato tra i vincitori di un FIRB-Futuro in ricerca.
Tra i suoi libri, l'edizione commentata della Giunta fatta al ragionamento degli articoli et de verbi di messer Pietro Bembo di Lodovico Castelvetro (Antenore 2004), Italiano lingua delle arti.
