News

Nicola Scattarreggia is an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Structural Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome. He obtained his Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pavia and a PhD in Understanding and Managing Extremes from the ROSE School at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia, where he investigated the performance of reinforced concrete bridges subjected to both ordinary and extreme (e.g., earthquake, impacts) loading. During his doctoral studies, he was a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on structural assessment up to collapse, seismic risk assessment, advanced discrete element modeling, and retrofitting of structures. He has co-authored several international publications and received prestigious awards, including the 20 Years ReLUIS Award (2023) for innovative and relevant projects in structural engineering and the Best PhD Thesis Award (2024) from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). He has contributed to numerous national and international research projects. Complementing his academic activities, he has been involved as a consulting engineer in high-profile projects, such as the forensic investigations on the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, the structural assessment of the second ring of the San Siro Meazza Stadium in Milan, and the seismic retrofitting of the dome of the San Marco Cathedral in L’Aquila, damaged during the 2009 earthquake sequence.
