Sapienza offers a wide range of opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad: in Europe and beyond, for both short and long periods, thesis research abroad, and more.
Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions. It funds mobility for study purposes (SMS) across all disciplines and levels of study (including PhD) and supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area. The Erasmus+ programme allows students to attend courses and pass exams, with full recognition in their academic record, or to carry out research for the preparation of their Master’s or PhD thesis.

Internships in European countries: Erasmus+ traineeship
Erasmus+ traineeship mobility allows students to carry out internships in companies, training centres, and research institutions located in participating countries. The programme provides for full-time internships abroad, recognised as an integral part of the study programme. Internships can also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection takes place before the award of the degree. The months of traineeship mobility are added to those of Erasmus study mobility, within the overall limit set by the programme.

CIVIS European Alliance, ‘A European Civic University’
Sapienza is a partner of the CIVIS European Alliance, ‘A European Civic University’, funded by the European Union and established together with the following universities:

The alliance has developed a variety of joint programmes across its 11 European campuses to create a true European Higher Education Area and contribute to building a strong and multilingual European knowledge society. Training is research-based and includes innovative teaching activities, in addition to traditional Erasmus mobility, such as short-term, virtual, and distance mobility.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding provided by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) and Sapienza’s own resources, every year students can spend a study period abroad, to sit exams or carry out thesis research, in one of the more than 200 non-EU institutions with which Sapienza has bilateral agreements. The Overseas mobility grant amounts to €700.00 net per month for the first five months, and €500.00 net per month thereafter. The stay abroad must be continuous, with a minimum duration of 90 days and a maximum of two consecutive semesters. The grant may only be used once per study cycle and is not cumulative with other Sapienza grants.

Study or research periods in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, allows students and staff to spend a study/research period for thesis work or teaching/training activities in non-EU countries. It provides a scholarship and travel expenses. All activities carried out abroad are recognised upon return, as specified in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility may last from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 6 months (extendable up to 12 months, with the last 6 months under the Zero-EU Grant scheme). ICM grants also cover doctoral research mobility for the same duration. Travel costs are calculated using the Distance Calculator based on the distance between the home and host institutions.

Scholarships for thesis research abroad
Scholarships for thesis research abroad are available to regularly enrolled students in at least the first year of a Master’s Degree, or in the second to last/final year of a single-cycle Master’s Degree, who wish to carry out part of their thesis preparation abroad at foreign or EU institutions, organisations, companies, or supranational or international institutions of adequate scientific and cultural standing. The thesis research abroad shall last at least two continuous months. The scholarship amounts to €2,821.00 gross (including IRAP, Italian regional tax on productive activities). Scholarships are awarded through competitive calls managed by the Faculties.

Postgraduate scholarships for training abroad
Postgraduate scholarships for training abroad allow graduates to attend courses or training activities at foreign or international institutions of university level. These scholarships are awarded annually, with a minimum duration of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months. The monthly amount is €1,290.00, tax-free. They are reserved for graduates holding a Master’s Degree or equivalent obtained at Sapienza University of Rome by the last session of the academic year preceding the call for applications and who are under 29 years of age.

International study programmes
Sapienza promotes the activation of integrated study programmes within its degree courses, in collaboration with one or more foreign universities. These programmes allow students to spend part of their academic career – corresponding to at least one semester and a minimum of 30 ECTS credits – at partner institutions and, upon completion, to obtain, in addition to the Italian degree, the degree awarded by the partner university or universities.
Mobility funding for integrated programmes follows Erasmus+ EU rules or specific university calls.

This Master’s degree programme includes an international study programme leading to an Italian-French double degree.
Degree programme activities
The Academic Area Council (CAD) is committed to always increase the number of Erasmus+ agreements with foreign universities, progressively expanding both the number of partner countries (including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Romania and Turkey) and the total number of agreements. Opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ programme for activities at partner institutions are promptly communicated to students. Support in defining the activities to be carried out abroad is provided by the academic coordinators of the agreements and by the Academic Mobility Coordinator (RAM) for the programme.
It should also be noted that, as part of initiatives aimed at strengthening the international dimension of teaching, agreements have been established for the awarding of an Italian-French double Master’s degree programme with selected French Grandes Écoles of engineering, including:
- Centrale Supélec, Université Paris-Saclay, for the curricula ‘Organisation Management’ and ‘Industrial Systems Management’
- École Nationale Supérieure de l'Électronique et de ses Applications (ENSEA), for the curriculum ‘Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics in Management’
