Studi scientifici
Ha svolto numerosi studi in ambito di neuroscienze cognitive e di neurofisiologia clinica mediate tecniche di elettroencefalografia, magnetoencefalografia, risonanza magnetica funzionale e stimolazione transcranica magnetica per chiarire l’organizzazione funzionale efficiente del cervello di persone esperte e in buona salute (atleti, musicisti) sia le anomalie di tale organizzazione funzionale in persone con disturbi cerebrovascolari e con patologie neurologiche quali la malattia di Alzheimer e la malattia di Parkinson. Questi studi sono stati finanziati sia dalla Comunità europea (Settimo Programma quadro) sia dal Governo italiano tramite il Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca (MIUR) e il Ministero della Salute.
E’ coautore di più di 200 articoli di neuroscienze pubblicati su riviste internazionali con revisione anonima, fattore di impatto e registrazione su MEDLINE (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/).
- Azione 1. Descrivere i meccanismi neurofisiologici di generazione dei ritmi EEG registrati in condizioni di veglia rilassata come espressione della fluttuazione della vigilanza in pazienti neurologici con deficit cognitivi, giovani e anziani, con particolare interesse alla malattia di Alzheimer. L’obiettivo è di chiarire il significato funzionale della frequenza e della topografia delle oscillazioni dell’attività cerebrale dell’Uomo nei diversi circuiti cerebrali che sott’intendono le funzioni cognitive, anche valutando le possibili applicazioni cliniche.
- Azione 2. Descrivere i meccanismi neurofisiologici di generazione dei ritmi EEG registrati nell’Uomo durante lo svolgimento di processi sensoriali, cognitivi e motori in condizioni fisiologiche. L’obiettivo è di chiarire il significato funzionale della frequenza e della topografia delle oscillazioni dell’attività cerebrale dell’Uomo nei diversi circuiti cerebrali che sott’intendono tali processi, come base per approfondimenti in ambito clinico e riabilitativo.
- Azione 3. Approfondire le analogie nei meccanismi neurofisiologici di generazione dei ritmi EEG registrati nell’Uomo e in modelli animali. L’obiettivo è di definire biomarker EEG con valore traslazionale per la scoperta di nuovi farmaci per la malattia di Alzheimer.
