Curriculum
Guido Antonelli has been a Full Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at the Department of Molecular Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome, since 2002.
He began his academic career at the Institute of Virology at Sapienza University in 1989, followed by a position at the Department of Biomedicine, University of Pisa, in 1992. He also gained international experience during research stays at the Department of Microbiology, University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston, Texas, USA) in 1984, and at the Clinical Research Center, Division of Immunological Medicine (Harrow, London, UK) in 1987.
His early research focused on the in vivo and in vitro mechanisms underlying the production and action of interferons. Currently, his research group investigates interferons as well as the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and control of several viral infections, including HIV, HCV, major respiratory viruses (such as SARS-CoV-2 and RSV), and HPV.
He is actively involved in numerous national and international research projects focused on HIV, HCV, and SARS-CoV-2.
Professor Antonelli served for many years as President of SIVIM (Italian Society for Medical Virology), and he is currently Vice-President of SIM (Italian Society for Microbiology).
He has authored or co-authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and currently serves as a co-editor or editorial board member for several scientific journals, including Clinical Microbiology and Infection, Journal of Medical Virology, among others.
