Attività di ricerca
L’attività di ricerca è stata orientata principalmente all’ambito dell’ingegneria sismica, sviluppando altresì argomenti connessi al campo della sismologia e della pericolosità sismica. In particolare i principali temi di ricerca affrontati hanno riguardato le tematiche riguardanti: la modellazione e analisi della risposta dinamica di sistemi lineari e non lineari a uno o più gradi di libertà, l’analisi della risposta di strutture intelaiate in termini di accelerazione di piano per la stima delle domande sismiche di piano, la caratterizzazione del moto sismico nel near-fault, la definizione di leggi di attenuazione per il territorio italiano, lo studio di eventi sismici recenti, lo studio del comportamento sismico di strutture murarie.
In particolare i settori di riferimento nei quali è stata svolta la ricerca sono: l’ingegneria strutturale; l’ingegneria sismica; la valutazione e adeguamento di edifici esistenti; la valutazione del potenziale di danno del moto del suolo; la vulnerabilità sismica; la modellazione, l’ analisi e la protezione anche con sistemi innovativi di sistemi strutturali sottoposti a eccitazione sismica; l’isolamento sismico. Responsabile e partecipante a numerosi progetti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali dal 1993 ad oggi.
Un’altra attività di rilievo è stata la partecipazione a missioni di studio a seguito di eventi sismici quali: Sicilia Sud Orientale (1990); Potenza (1991); Kobe, Giappone (1995); Umbria-Marche (1997); Molise (2002); L’Aquila (2009).
Membro dell’Editorial Board delle riviste: Earthquakes and Structures, Frontiers in Built Environment, Advances in Civil Engineering. Open Journal of Earthquake Research. Attività professionale
L’attività professionale a riguardato essenzialmente, in termini di consulenze, tematiche legate all’atività di ricerca. In particolare, recentemente è stato: consulente tecnico scientifico per la caratterizzazione di parametrici sintetici per la stima del potenziale di danno del moto del suolo nella definizione dei Terremoti di Scenario nell’ambito del Programma Priolo ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics) - APAT (Agenzia per la Protezione dell’Ambiente e per i Servizi Tecnici) “La messa in sicurezza dell'area industriale di Priolo-Augusta rispetto al rischio terremoto e maremoto”; consulente per la valutazione della vulnerabilità sismica di vari edifici in muratura proprietà della Banca d’Italia in accordo alla Convenzione stipulata con il Dipartimento di Ingegneria delle Strutture; consulente per l’impiego dell’isolamento sismico per nuove realizzazioni ed adeguamento di ospedali in zone ad alta pericolosità sismica.

Research Activities
The research activity was mainly oriented to the earthquake engineering, developing arguments also connected to the field of seismology and seismic hazard. Specifically, the main research themes have focused on issues relating to: the modeling and analysis of the dynamic response of linear and nonlinear systems with one or more degrees of freedom, the response analysis of frame structures in terms of floor acceleration for the estimation of the storey seismic demand, characterization of ground motion in the near-fault, the definition of attenuation relationships, the study of recent seismic events, the study of the seismic behavior of masonry structures.
In particular, more recently, the research was oriented to the fields of: structural engineering, earthquake engineering, evaluation and vulnerability assessment of existing buildings, evaluation of damage potential of earthquake ground motion, seismic vulnerability; modeling, analysis and seismic protection with innovative structural systems; seismic isolation. Responsible and participant in numerous national and international research projects since 1993.
Another important activity was the participation in earthquake surveys as a result of seismic events such as: South Eastern Sicily (1990), Potenza (1991) Kobe, Japan (1995), Umbria-Marche (1997), Molise (2002 ), L'Aquila (2009).
Member of the Editorial Board of the following scientific journals: Earthquakes and Structures, Frontiers in Built Environment, Advances in Civil Engineering. Open Journal of Earthquake Research. Professionals activities
He is a member of the Professional Charter of Engineers since 1990. He has been consulting on topics of seismic design and assessment of new and existing buildings since then.
The professional activity focused mainly in terms of consulting issues related to the research activity. In particular, it has recently been: scientific and technical advisor for the characterization of synthetic parameter for estimating the damage potential of ground motion in the definition of Scenario Earthquakes within the Programme Priolo ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics) - APAT (agency for Environmental Protection and Technical Services) "The safety of the industrial area of Priolo-Augusta with respect to the risk of an earthquake and tsunami wave"; consultant for the evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of various masonry buildings owned by the Bank of 'Italy according to the agreement signed with the Department of Structural Engineering; consultant for the seismic isolation design of new construction and upgrading of hospitals in areas of high seismic hazard.
