A. Research
1. EDV – ITALIAN MEDIEVAL EPIGRAPHY IN THE VERNACULAR (IX-XVTH C.): A NEW DATABASE
EDV aims at providing scholars, students and the general public with a flexible and user-friendly database cataloguing all inscriptions in Italian or other vernaculars (not in Latin) produced in Italy (IX-XVth c.) It includes inscriptions executed on whatever surface (stone, plaster, canvas, cloth, glass, terracotta, iron and other metals etc.) and intended for some form of public exposure, loosely classified into four categories:
1. Public notices (texts with an identifiable public purpose carrying a message of public interest addressed to a given social group).
2. Captions and explanatory notes (artists's signatures, explanatory captions in paintings; messages of a didascalic or moralizing nature – proverbs, adages etc.).
3. Graffiti
4. Inscriptions on objects of everyday use.
The database counts at the moment around 540 items and its publication online is under way

3. Le Radici Plurali dell'Identità: l'Italiano fra le Lingue d'Europa (2011-2013)
In November 2011 the project was presented the project at the Museum conference The Museum 2011. Building Identity: The Making of National Museums and Identity Politics in Taipei, Taiwan. The conference was organized by the National Museum of History, Taipei; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Leicester University's School of Museum Studies, National Taipei University of Education.
The project was awarded the prize Sapienza Ricerca 2011 and €6000.

4. Scrittura e società fra Medioevo e Rinascimento (2005-2007) €25,000
The project’s outcomes were discussed in Siena in May 2008.
The Proceedings of the conference were published (see n. 4).

2. EUROTALES project: a Museum of the Voices of Europe (directed by Nadia Cannata, Sapienza and Maia W. Gahtan, Istituto Lorenzo dei Medici, Florence)
The languages of Europe are dynamically displaced across the continent. We figure rather easily their position across space. Less easily figured is, however, their making across time and the overlap between them across both time and space. There are two main types of projects around language museums: museums of national languages and identities (Afrikaaner, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Lithuanian, Norwegian) and projects which negotiate with ideas of multiculturalism, or the idea of language itself, such a Mundolingua, Paris.
Our project falls in the latter category. We mainly aim to:
• Disseminate hard core research and knowledge in a form suitable for its appreciation on the part of scholars and students as well as the general public
• Encourage the active participation on the part of the public in the discussion of matters concerning their cultural identities
• Encourage the public to contribute information on their linguistic heritage and literary cultures and therefore to became active proprietors of this shared heritage
• Create innovative devices to store, elaborate and exhibit the wealth of the materials available – both the result of scholarly research and its rich tradition and the data resulting from the active contribution of the public of visitors
