Part VII – Research Activities
M. La Torre contributed to identifying a new human telomere-associated factor linked with the nuclear envelope. M. La Torre contributed to the genetics dissection of its roles in telomere and genome stability maintenance (Burla et al. Plos Genetics 2015; Burla et al. Open Biology 2016; Merigliano, Burla et al. Plos genetics 2021; La Torre, Merigliano, J Exp Clin Cancer Res 2022). M. La Torre also contributed to the dissection of the ESCRTI AKTIP human protein role in the biology of cancer and aging by producing and characterizing the first animal model with its reduced gene expression (La Torre et al. Aging cell 2018). Currently, M. La Torre is involved in projects that aim to unravel the link between telomeres and the nuclear factors acting at the nuclear envelope in the context of cancer and aging (PI Isabella Saggio).
During her PhD and her postdoctoral experience in the laboratory of Professor Isabella Saggio, M. La Torre used molecular biology and genetic tools (included vectors for gene transfer and gene silencing) for the dissection of the role of genes involved in genome stability (Burla et al. Plos Genetics 2015; Burla et al. Open Biology 2016; Merigliano, Burla et al. Plos genetics 2021; La Torre, Merigliano, J Exp Clin Cancer Res 2022) and in cellular models of inherited diseases to find new possible therapeutic targets (Raimondo et al. Plos one 2020, Piersanti et al. Plos One, 2015, La Torre, Merigliano, J Exp Clin Cancer Res 2022). M. La Torre contributed to the analysis of the role of vitamin B6 in a D. melanogaster model of type 2 diabetes and its role in genome stability (Merigliano et al. Scientific reports 2018). M. La Torre contributed to the study of the genetic and molecular basis of the human Fibrous dysplasia of bone disease caused by dominant activating gene mutations of the GNAS locus (Raimondo et al. Plos one 2020). M. La Torre also contributed to studying the role of telomeres and DNA damage in a mouse model of premature aging (La Torre et al. Aging cell 2018) and the specific contribution of DNA damage and genome stability in the hypertrophic heart (La Torre et al., Aging cell 2023).
