Domenico Lembo ha conseguito il titolo di dottore di ricerca in Ingegneria Informatica presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Informatica, Automatica e Gestionale A. Ruberti della Sapienza nel 2004. E’ attualmente professore ordinario del settore IINF-05/A (Sistemi di Elaborazione delle Informazioni) presso lo stesso dipartimento.

I sui principali interessi di ricerca sono relativi alla modellazione concettuale e semantica dei dati, la rappresentazione della conoscenza ed il ragionamento automatico, le logiche descrittive, il Semantic Web e l’uso delle ontologie nei sistemi informativi, l'integrazione dell'informazione ed il peer-to-peer computing, il trattamento di dati inconsistenti, il data cleaning, l'information disclosure.

Su questi argomenti ha pubblicato più di 120 articoli su riviste e sugli atti delle maggiori conferenze e workshop internazionali e nazionali nel settore delle basi di dati, dell'intelligenza artificiale e della rappresentazione della conoscenza (inclusi AIJ, ACM TODS, SWJ, ACM PODS, VLDB, IJCAI, AAAI, KR, ISWC). E' autore di tutorial presentati in congressi internazionali (ISWC, ESWC, AAAI) sui temi delle ontologie e del web semantico.

Ha partecipato e partecipa attualmente a diversi progetti di ricerca italiani ed europei sul tema dell’integrazione dei dati, del ragionamento su ontologie, della gestione dell’inconsistenza dell’informazione e del privacy-preserving query answering.

E' regolarmente membro del comitato di programma delle principali conferenze sulle aree scientifiche di sua competenza. E' stato PC co-Chair della 22nd International Conference of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA 2023), della 13th Reasoning Web Summer School (RW 2017), del 23mo Convegno Nazionale su Sistemi Evoluti di Basi di Dati (SEBD 2015), della 7th International Conference on Web Reasoning and Rule Systems (RR 2013) e del 20th International Workshop on Description Logics (DL 2007). Inoltre è General Chair del del 33mo Convegno Nazionale su Sistemi Evoluti di Basi di Dati (SEBD 2025) ed è stato General Chair del 25th International Workshop on Description Logics (DL 2012). E' stato vice-Presidente dello Steering Committee della International Conference on Web Reasoning and Rule Systems (RR) (periodo 2018-2024).

Nel 2020 ha vinto il Best Poster or Demo Award alla 19th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2020) per la demo “Ontology Mediated Information Extraction with MASTRO SYSTEM-T”, insieme a Yunyao Li, Lucian Popa, Kun Qian and Federico Maria Scafoglieri.

Ha ricevuto nel 2021 il premo AAAI per l'articolo "DL-Lite: Tractable Description Logics for Ontologies "(AAAI 2005), insieme a Diego Calvanese, Giuseppe De Giacomo, Maurizio Lenzerini, Riccardo Rosati.

Nel 2024 ha vinto il distinguished paper award alla conferenza IJCAI per l'articolo "Enhancing Controlled Query Evaluation through Epistemic Policies", insieme a Gianluca Cima, Lorenzo Marconi, Riccardo Rosati, Domenico Fabio Savo.

Dal 2004 è docente di corsi di ingegneria informatica (basi di dati, progettazione del software, fondamenti di informatica, big data management) presso la Sapienza. Dal 2023 è presidente del Consiglio di Area Didattica in Ingegneria Informatica della Sapienza.

E' co-fondatore di "OBDA systems", start-up della Sapienza. Dal 2023 è il responsabile del CAIRNE (https://cairne.eu/) Rome Office.

Domenico Lembo received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering A. Ruberti at Sapienza University of Rome in 2004. He is currently a Full Professor in the scientific sector IINF-05/A (Information Processing Systems) at the same department.

His main research interests include conceptual and semantic data modeling, knowledge representation and automated reasoning, description logics, the Semantic Web and the use of ontologies in information systems, information integration and peer-to-peer computing, inconsistent data handling, data cleaning, and information disclosure.

He has published over 120 articles on these topics in journals and in the proceedings of major international and national conferences and workshops in the areas of databases, artificial intelligence, and knowledge representation (including AIJ, ACM TODS, SWJ, ACM PODS, VLDB, IJCAI, AAAI, KR, ISWC). He is the author of tutorials presented at international conferences (ISWC, ESWC, AAAI) on the topics of ontologies and the Semantic Web.

He has participated and currently participates in several Italian and European research projects on data integration, ontology-based reasoning, inconsistency management, and privacy-preserving query answering.

He is a regular member of the program committee for leading conferences in his areas of expertise. He served as PC co-Chair of the 22nd International Conference of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA 2023), the 13th Reasoning Web Summer School (RW 2017), the 23rd Italian Symposium on Advanced Database Systems (SEBD 2015), the 7th International Conference on Web Reasoning and Rule Systems (RR 2013), and the 20th International Workshop on Description Logics (DL 2007). Additionally, he is General Chair of the 33rd Italian Symposium on Advanced Database Systems (SEBD 2025) and was General Chair of the 25th International Workshop on Description Logics (DL 2012). He served as Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Web Reasoning and Rule Systems (RR) from 2018 to 2024.

In 2024, he received the Distinguished Paper Award at the IJCAI conference for the paper "Enhancing Controlled Query Evaluation through Epistemic Policies", co-authored with Gianluca Cima, Lorenzo Marconi, Riccardo Rosati, and Domenico Fabio Savo.

Since 2004, he has been teaching courses in Computer Engineering (Databases, Software Engineering, Computer Science Fundamentals, Big Data Management) at Sapienza. Since 2023, he has served as President of the Degree Program Council in Computer Engineering at Sapienza.

He is co-founder of OBDA Systems, a Sapienza start-up. Since 2023, he has been the Head of the CAIRNE Rome Office (https://cairne.eu/).
