Research activity (since 1980) in the field of liver damage, liver regeneration, drug-induced liver damage, drug-transporters in the liver, hepatic cell proliferation and apoptosis, cholestasis, liver disease pathophysiology and treatment, Hepatic Stem-cells, regenerative medicine of liver and pancreas, cholangiocarcinoma and liver cancer, network and precision medicine, Liver Stem cells. Coordinator of Sapienza Network for the cell therapy of liver diseases; D. Alvaro was the first to discover stem cells in the human biliary tree and to use them for the cell therapy of cirrhosis; coordinator of the AISF Group on cholangiocarcinoma (Italian Liver Association); coordinator of the AISF-SIGE committee on cholangiocarcinoma with publication of the Italian Guidelines; Coordinator of the European Network for the Study of Cholangiocarcinoma (ENS-CCA); -Coordinator of the Italian guidelines on Cholangiocarcinoma (published on Dig. Liver Dis. 2020. Part I and II); Chairs of the International guidelines on Cholangiocarcinoma (EASL+ILCA); D. Alvaro was the first to demonstrate that cholangiocarcinoma is a stem-cell based disease and to define the profile of cancer stem cells in this cancer. D. Alvaro was the first to identify the crucial role of cholangiocytes in the bile pathophysiology and to demonstrate how they represent a neuroendocrine compartment in diseased liver, driving repair processes. D. Alvaro discovered the isolated bile duct unit. D. Alvaro founded the first italian university department on Translational and Precision Medicine. Prof. D. Alvaro was one of the founders of a start-up (Biosensing srl) engaged in the development of medical devices aimed at real-time diagnostics of changes in intestinal permeability or intestinal inflammation or markers of systemic inflammation. The Co-PI is the owner of four international patents on the identification, preparation and therapeutic use of stem cells for the treatment of terminal hepatic and biliary tract diseases. The Co-PI is the director of STITCH - Sapienza information-based Technology InnovaTion Center for Health which is the first Sapienza research center that combines medicine with the most innovative information technologies, such as network medicine, big data, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, robotics and sensors at the service of medicine. STITCH's activities are focused on the promotion and coordination of transdisciplinary research projects whose competitive advantage is given by the integration between the IT departments, engineering and medical, or from the common management of skills, instruments and laboratories, for the development of innovative solutions in the health sector.
