Curriculum

SUMMARY

My scientific research is in the field of bioinformatics. It focuses on the prediction and analysis of protein structure, functional sites, missense variants, linear motifs, phosphorylation sites and protein-ligand interactions, aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms characterising the function and mis-functioning of genes and proteins in various contexts, including host-pathogen interactions, protein-drug interactions, drug resistance, therapeutic targets and disease-related point mutations.
After graduating in physics of complex systems at Sapienza University (1997), I completed a post-graduate internship (1998-1999), a PhD (1999-2003) and a Postdoc (2003-2007) at the University of Rome 'Tor Vergata', in the research group led by M. Helmer-Citterich. In 2008, I joined the Biocomputing Unit at Sapienza University of Rome, led by A. Tramontano, until securing a permanent senior researcher position at the CNR in 2016. In 2010, I got involved in the Bioinformatics Training Network (BTN) and a few years later in the Global Organisation for Bioinformatics Learning, Education and Training (GOBLET), expanding my research to include learning processes and curriculum development. In 2014, I became the Training coordinator for the ELIXIR Italian Node and established several collaborations within the ELIXIR research infrastructure, gaining expertise in data and software management, sharing, integration, and FAIRification. Many publications since 2010 reflect my research infrastructure-related interests and research.
Since October 2022, I have been on leave from the CNR to become an assistant professor at the Department of Biochemical Sciences "A. Rossi Fanelli" of Sapienza University of Rome. Since becoming an assistant professor, I have established the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Group at Sapienza University of Rome in collaboration with Prof. Stefano Pascarella, and I have significantly refocused my efforts on scientific research in bioinformatics. Besides Prof. Pascarella and myself, the group currently comprises four doctoral students, two research fellows, and several bachelor's and master's students, and it has numerous national and international collaborations.
