Curriculum

Giancarlo Ciotoli, Ph.D., Senior Researcher at the Institute of Environmental Geology and Geoengineering of the National Research Council of Italy where he is also responsible of the Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry and Geochemical Mapping (GASLAB) and of the Laboratory of Natural Radioactivity of the CNR-IGAG at Montelibretti - Area della Ricerca Roma 1. He is also co-responsible of the Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry at the Earth Science Department of the Rome University Sapienza

Nuovo SSD: GEOS-01/C

Key Words: Geochemistry of Deep Fluids, High Performance Computing and Modelling (GIS, Spatial Analysis and Geostatistics), Risk Assessment

The research activities concerned the study of the gas (fluids) migration processes from shallow and deep geological sources to the surface environment, and their interactions with geosphere, biosphere and atmosphere, as well as with human activity. The research was carried out in different fields of Geosciences:
• Geochemical risk: ionizing radiation (indoor and outdoor radon), non-volcanic emissions of CO2 and CH4 and their effects on the composition of the lower atmosphere and human health
• Seismic risk: study of concentrations and isotopic composition of endogenous gases for the study of active faults, and for applications in support of seismic microzonation activities.
• Georesources: study and quantification of global CH4 emissions of geologic origin, including CH4 leakage from abandoned (exploratory/production) oil wells, study of outgassing in geothermal areas, research on geologically derived H2 (white hydrogen).
• Geospatial Analysis and Artificial Intelligence Applications: study of relationships between proxy variables for thematic mapping related to geochemical risk (indoor radon), and assessment of seismically induced landslides and cosquake shaking, and natural and anthropogenic sinkhole risk.
The research activity, mainly carried out in the framework of international projects, has enabled the acquisition of experience and competence to independently determine original and significant advancements in the area of environmental risks (natural and anthropic), with particular reference to the application of innovative and low-cost monitoring techniques and strategies integrated in Web-GIS platforms.
The over 25 years of experience in the field of High-Performance Computing (Geostatistics, Geospatial Analysis, Machine Learning, and Modelling) and its applications in the GIS environment, contributed to a robust scientific production linked to the study and the evaluation of geochemical, environmental and anthropic risks, especially in urban areas.

From 1998 to 2003 was professor of Environmental Geochemistry at Calabria University, and from 2000 to 2013 was professor of Geostatistics and GIS at the Rome University Sapienza. He was lecturer of the courses "Applications of Statistics and Geostatistical Techniques for Analyzing Environmental Data" and "Analysis of Environmental Data Using GIS" for the Doctoral Program in Environmental Sciences at the University Ca 'Foscari of Venice, and of the course of Geostatistics for the PhD school in Geodynamics at the University of ROMA TRE. He was also lecturer of the course "Geospatial Analysis" for doctoral school and master's degree at the Universities of Urbino, Naples, Venice and Ferrara, and at research institutions such as ISPRA, and Istituto Zooprofilattico di Lazio e Toscana.
He is consultant of the Lazio Region for the activities concerning the areas with CO2 dangerous emissions and the sinkhole risk. He was also scientific coordinator of the following projects: “Assessment of areas with anomalous concentrations of CO2 in the Isola Sacra (Fiumicino) (Lazio)”; “Study on the distribution of cancer in dogs in areas with high potential for radon”. (Institute Zooprofilattico of Lazio and Tuscany); “Study of the processes of migration and accumulation of radon in the workplace (INAIL)”. He is currently responsible for the CNR-IGAG of the LIFE project “Radon rEal time monitoring system and Proactive Indoor Remediation” - RESPIRE. LIFE16 ENV / IT / 000553, which involves the participation of Universities, European Research Centres and Enterprises.

He was involved in more than 15 EU research projects regarding different environmental topics, as well as radon risk and CO2 capture and storage. The experience gained in international projects is also characterized by an important synergy between research activities and training activities, highlighting the centrality of joint work between Research, University and Enterprise. Author of over 150 publications in national and international journals and conference proceedings, and of one textbook in Italian regarding the statistical and geostatistical applications for the analysis of environmental and geological data.
Following the earthquake in Central Italy on 24 August 2016, he participated in the activities coordinated by the National Civil Protection at the DICOMAC in Rieti, within the Center of Competence for Seismic Microzonation and its Applications.

• National Scientific Qualification as Associated Professor in GEOCHIMICA, MINERALOGIA, PETROLOGIA, VULCANOLOGIA, GEORISORSE ED APPLICAZIONI (from 10/01/2020 to 10/01/2029).
• Member of the European Radon Association (ERA)
• Consultant of the Lazio Region for the activities concerning the Determination N. A00271 of 19/01/2012 "Areas of dangerous emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the territories of the Municipalities of Castel Gandolfo, Ciampino, Marino and Rome (Municipalities X, XI, XII).
• Member of the technical-scientific commission of the Lazio Region on the risk of gas emissions in Lazio.
• Member of the ISPRA technical-scientific commission for the census of underground cavities in Rome and sinkhole risk in urban areas
