10611924 Lingua e letteratura etiopica

IT: Il corso intende fornire un’introduzione alla lingua etiopica classica (geez, gheez, gǝʿǝz o gǝʿz), presentandone la scrittura, la morfologia e le strutture sintattiche fondamentali, tramite una concisa presentazione sistematica e l’analisi di testi semplici con uso del dizionario. Scritta da quasi 2000 anni, documentata da iscrizioni dal II/III sec. d.C. e in manoscritti dalla Tarda Antichità e dal Medioevo fino a oggi, e utilizzata in vari contesti – nella storiografia, nella letteratura, nella liturgia, nella medicina, nell’amministrazione e nelle scienze naturali, astronomia e cronologia, e ancor oggi insegnata nelle scuole tradizionali – l’etiopico è la più antica lingua locale documentata nell’Africa subsahariana e lo strumento di espressione di una letteratura classica, tramandata da una cultura manoscritta unica e affascinante, espressione di un cristianesimo al tempo stesso antico e peculiare. La conoscenza dell’etiopico è anche il presupposto necessario per la ricerca e la comprensione storica della cultura e della storia dell’Etiopia e dell’Eritrea fino ai giorni nostri. L’etiopico è inoltre lingua essenziale per lo studio della linguistica semitica e la migliore introduzione allo studio della più importante lingua veicolare di oggi, cioè l’amarico; è anche una delle lingue essenziali per lo studio della letteratura biblica, parabiblica e cristiana antica, in quanto non pochi testi importanti sono stati trasmessi esclusivamente o nella loro versione più antica rimastaci, solamente versione etiopica.

EN: The course aims to provide an introduction to the classical Ethiopic language (Geez, Gǝʿǝz or Gǝʿz), presenting its writing, morphology and fundamental syntactic structures through a concise systematic presentation and analysis of simple texts with the use of the dictionary. Written down for almost 2000 years, documented by inscriptions from the second/third century CE, in manuscripts from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages to the present day, and used in various contexts – in historiography, literature, liturgy, medicine, administration and the natural sciences, astronomy and chronology, and still taught in traditional schools – Ethiopic is the oldest documented local language in sub-Saharan Africa and the medium of expression of a classical literature, handed down from a unique and fascinating manuscript culture, the expression of a Christianity that is both ancient and peculiar. Knowledge of Ethiopic is also a prerequisite for research and historical understanding of the culture and history of Ethiopia and Eritrea to the present day. Ethiopic is also an essential language for the study of Semitic linguistics and the best introduction to the study of the most important vehicular language of today, namely Amharic; it is also one of the essential languages for the study of biblical, para-biblical and early Christian literature, as not a few important texts have been transmitted exclusively or in their oldest surviving version, only in Ethiopic.

IT: Il corso permetterà agli studenti di orientarsi tra le questioni essenziali della filologia etiopica, nel suo senso più ampio di storia e cultura delle civiltà prevalentemente semitofone dell’Etiopia e dell’Eritrea e della tradizione testuale del cristianesimo etiopico in particolare. L’applicazione di un’accezione più precisa e ristretta di filologia in senso proprio come storia della tradizione e critica del testo, sarà adottata in presenza di studenti che abbiano i requisiti specifici necessari.

EN: The course will enable students to navigate the essential issues of Ethiopian philology, in its broadest sense as the history and culture of the predominantly Semitophone civilisations of Ethiopia and Eritrea and the textual tradition of Ethiopian Christianity in particular. The application of a more precise and narrower meaning of philology in its proper sense as the history of tradition and textual criticism will be adopted in the presence of students with the necessary specific requirements.

IT: Il corso permetterà agli studenti di orientarsi tra le questioni essenziali della linguistica etiopica, nel suo senso più ampio di storia delle lingue dell’Etiopia e dell’Eritrea. Una presentazione sistematica introduttiva della situazione linguistica nella regione etiopico-eritrea e nel Corno d’Africa – con un’attenzione prevalente per le lingue semitiche del Corno che presentano una più lunga fase di attestazione (etiopico, amarico, tigrino, hararino, con l’importante precedente del sabeo epigrafico d’Etiopia), con riferimenti al quadro afroasiatico – permetterà agli studenti di familiarizzarsi con una tradizione di studi che ha affrontato importanti questioni di metodo: dalla classificazione linguistica e al rapporto delle lingue semitiche etiopiche moderne con l’etiopico classico, alla comparazione tra documentazioni profondamente differenti per qualità, continuità ed estensione; dai fenomeni di convergenza areale tra lingue appartenenti a famiglie diverse pur entro la stessa macrofamiglia (semitiche e cuscitiche), al ruolo della linguistica nella ricostruzione della protostoria dell’area, con applicazione di metodi glottostatistici e glottocronologici; dai rapporti tra linguistica e filologia, specialmente con riferimento all’etiopico, ai fenomeni di ‘biliguismo’ gerarchico nella distribuzione d’uso (per esempio tra etiopico e amarico, con riferimento a testi letterari e documentari). A seconda delle richieste il corso potrà orientarsi verso direzioni specifiche: dalla presentazione sistematica delle lingue semitiche d’Etiopia nella loro attestazione all’approfondimento della struttura fonologica, morfologica, sintattica e tipologica di una di esse, alla lettura di testi (dall’epigrafia tardoantica ai documenti odierni) con dettagliato commento linguistico-filologico.

EN: The course will enable students to navigate the essential issues of Ethiopian linguistics, in its broader sense as the history of the languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. A systematic introductory presentation of the linguistic situation in the Ethiopian-Eritrean region and the Horn of Africa—with a prevailing focus on the Semitic languages of the Horn that exhibit a longer phase of attestation (Ethiopian, Amharic, Tigrinya, Harari, with the important precedent of the epigraphic Sabaic of Ethiopia), with references to the Afro-Asiatic framework—will enable students to familiarize themselves with a tradition of scholarship that has addressed important questions of method: from linguistic classification and the relationship of modern Ethiopian Semitic languages to Classical Ethiopic, to the comparison of records that differ profoundly in quality, continuity and extent; from the phenomena of areal convergence between languages belonging to different families though within the same macro-family (Semitic and Cushitic), to the role of linguistics in the reconstruction of the protohistory of the area, with application of glottostatistical and glottochronological methods; from the relationships between linguistics and philology, especially with reference to Ethiopic, to the phenomena of ‘hierarchical biliguism’ in the distribution of usage (e.g. between Ethiopic and Amharic, with reference to literary and documentary texts). Depending on demand, the course may move in specific directions: from the systematic presentation of the Semitic languages of Ethiopia in their attestation to an in-depth study of the phonological, morphological, syntactic and typological structure of one of them, to the reading of texts (from late antique epigraphy to present-day documents) with detailed linguistic-philological commentary.

Alessandro Bausi (1963, Laureato nel 1988 presso l'Università di Firenze, Dottore di ricerca nel 1992 presso l'Istituto Orientale di Napoli) è professore ordinario di Semitistica - lingue e letterature dell'Etiopia (s.s.d. STAA-01/G) presso la Sapienza Università di Roma, Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, Dipartimento Storia Antropologia Religioni Arte Spettacolo (novembre 2023-‍).
Già Ricercatore (1995) e Professore associato (2002) di Lingua e letteratura etiopica presso l'Università degli Studi di Napoli "L'Orientale", è stato Professore (W3) di Studi etiopici (Äthiopistik) presso la University of Hamburg, Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, Asien-Afrika-Institut, Abteilung für Afrikanistik und Äthiopistik (settembre 2009-‍Ottobre 2023). È stato direttore della rivista Aethiopica: International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies (2009-2023) e dei suoi Supplements (2013-2023), e della serie Aethiopistische Forschungen (2010-2023). È consulente per il gǝʿǝz e gli studi etiopici ed eritrei per diverse altre collane e riviste, tra cui gli Scriptores Aethiopici del Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium (2010-), e i Texts and Studies in Eastern Christianity (2011-). Direttore dell'Encyclopaedia Aethiopica (2010-2014), del progetto "Comparative Oriental Manuscript Studies" (finanziato dalla European Science Foundation 2009-2014), e del progetto Advanced Grant del Consiglio europeo della ricerca "TraCES: From Translation to Creation: Changes in Ethiopic Style and Lexicon from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages" (2014-2019), è ora direttore scientifico del progetto a lungo termine dell'Akademie der Wissenschaften in Hamburg "Beta maṣāḥǝft: Die Schriftkultur des Christlichen Äthiopiens und Eritreas: Eine multimediale Forschungsumgebung" (2016-2040). È membro del Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures dell’University of Hamburg (2011-‍2023, permanent fellow dal novembre 2023) ed è stato co-direttore del Cluster of Excellence “Understanding Written Artefacts: Material, Interaction and Transmission in Manuscript Cultures” (2019-‍2023). È Senior Fellow della SSAS – Scuola Superiore di Studi Avanzati di Sapienza Università di Roma (2024–2027). È membro di diverse associazioni scientifiche, dell'Academia Europaea, dell'Accademia Ambrosiana, dell'Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, dell'Akademie der Wissenschaften in Hamburg, e dell'Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.
Ha pubblicato ampiamente sulla tradizione testuale e manoscritta dell'Etiopia e dell'Eritrea, contribuendo in particolare allo studio della fase più antica della storia scribale, linguistica e letteraria, dell'epigrafia, delle raccolte canoniche, agiografiche e liturgiche, e alla critica testuale.

Alessandro Bausi (1963, MA 1988 University of Florence, PhD 1992 Naples Oriental Institute) is Full Professor for Ethiopian Studies at Sapienza Università di Roma, Faculty of Humanities, Department Storia Antropologia Religioni Arte Spettacolo (November 2023–‍).
Formerly Assistant (1995) and Associate Professor (2002) of Ethiopic Language and Literature at the University of Naples 'L'Orientale', he has been Full Professor (W3) for Ethiopian Studies (Äthiopistik) at the University of Hamburg, Faculty of Humanities, Asien-Afrika-Institut, Abteilung für Afrikanistik und Äthiopistik (September 2009–‍October 2023). He has been the editor of the journal Aethiopica: International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies (2009–2023) and of its Supplements series (2013–2023), and of the series Aethiopistische Forschungen (2010–2023). He is consultant for Gǝʿǝz and Ethiopian and Eritrean studies for several other series and journals, including the Scriptores Aethiopici of the Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium (2010–), and the Texts and Studies in Eastern Christianity (2011–). Editor of the Encyclopaedia Aethiopica (2010–2014), Chair of the Comparative Oriental Manuscript Studies networking programme (funded by the European Science Foundation 2009–2014), and head of the European Research Council Advanced Grant Project 'TraCES: From Translation to Creation: Changes in Ethiopic Style and Lexicon from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages' (2014–2019), he is now heading the long-term project of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg 'Beta maṣāḥǝft: Die Schriftkultur des christlichen Äthiopiens und Eritreas: Eine multimediale Forschungsumgebung' (2016–2040). He is a member of the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures at the University of Hamburg (2011–‍2023, permanent fellow since November 2023) and has been Co-Spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts: Material, Interaction and Transmission in Manuscript Cultures' (2019–‍2023).
