Elisabetta Sirgiovanni is an Associate Professor of the History of Medicine and Bioethics at Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Molecular Medicine, Section of the History of Medicine and Bioethics. She teaches in degree programs for Medicine and Surgery, Bioinformatics, and Global Humanities. She holds a PhD in Cognitive Sciences from the University of Siena, with a background in philosophy and the history of science. She is a Fulbright Alumna and, as a Fulbright scholar, has worked at the Center for Bioethics at New York University. Previously, she conducted research at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York with a Short-term Mobility Grant from Italy’s National Research Council (CNR).
For five years, she worked at the National Research Council, supporting the scientific secretariat of the CNR Committee for Ethics and Research Integrity.
Currently, she serves as Member-at-Large on the Board of Directors of the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences (ISHN), is a board member of the Italian Society for Neuroethics (SINE), and a founding member and board member of the Italian Society for the Humanities in Medicine (SISUMed).
Her research focuses on the history and philosophy of neuroscience, including neuroethics. She has published on various topics such as psychiatric taxonomy, moral emotions, neuroenhancement, and the history of electroconvulsive therapy. She collaborated with the Sunday supplement of Il Sole 24 ore, La Stampa and other magazines on topics related to the neurosciences. She translated philosophical essays from English to Italian. She has given more than 80 talks in national and international conferences/events. She has organized international congresses (most recently: 26th ISHN Meeting, Rome June 14-18, 2022) and is involved in outreach activities and events for the Museum of the History of Medicine at Sapienza University. Her book on neuroethics, co-authored with Gilberto Corbellini ("Tutta colpa del cervello: un'introduzione alla neuroetica", Mondadori 2013), won the 2014 National Prize for Scientific Dissemination and the "Mario Tiengo" Cultural Award.

Elisabetta Sirgiovanni è Professore Associato di Storia della Medicina e Bioetica, presso la Sapienza Università di Roma, Dipartimento di Medicina Molecolare, Sezione di Storia della Medicina e Bioetica. Insegna nei corsi di laurea in medicina e chirurgia, bioinformatics e global humanities. Possiede un dottorato di ricerca in Scienze Cognitive (presso l’Università di Siena), con una formazione in filosofia e storia della scienza. È Alumna Fulbright. Ha lavorato presso il Center for Bioethics della New York University (come Fulbright Research Scholar) e, in precedenza, presso il Graduate Center della City University di New York con una borsa Short-term mobility del CNR. Ha lavorato per cinque anni presso il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, supportando la segreteria scientifica del Comitato per l'etica e l'integrità della ricerca del CNR.
E’ attualmente member-at large del consiglio direttivo della International Society for the History of the Neurosciences (ISHN), membro del consiglio direttivo della Società di Neuroetica (SINE), e membro e socio fondatore del consiglio direttivo della Società Italiana di Scienze Umane in Medicina (SISUMed).
Si occupa di storia e filosofia delle neuroscienze, inclusa la neuroetica. Ha pubblicato su vari temi quali la tassonomia psichiatrica, le emozioni morali, il neuroenhancement e la storia della terapia elettroconvulsivante. Ha collaborato con il supplemento domenicale de Il Sole 24 ore, La Stampa e altre riviste di divulgazione sui temi delle neuroscienze. Ha tradotto saggi di filosofia della mente dall'inglese all'italiano. Ha partecipato come relatrice a oltre 80 conferenze nazionali e internazionali e eventi pubblici. È stata organizzatrice di congressi internazionali (recente: 26th ISHN Meeting, Rome June 14-18, 2022) ed è impegnata in attività e eventi di divulgazione per il Museo di Storia della Medicina di Sapienza. Per il suo libro sulla neuroetica con Gilberto Corbellini ("Tutta colpa del cervello: un'introduzione alla neuroetica", Mondadori 2013) ha ricevuto nel 2014 il Premio Nazionale di Divulgazione Scientifica e il Premio Culturale "Mario Tiengo".
