A partire dall’Anno Accademico 2011/’12 Paolo Depaoli è docente di “Change manage-ment e apprendimento organizzativo” presso la Facoltà di Scienze Politiche dell’Università degli Studi di Milano.
A partire dal a.a. 2014/2015 cura la parte “Organizational, social, and ethical implications of information systems” del corso in inglese su “Legal aspects of ICTs” presso la Facoltà di Giurisprudenza della LUISS “Guido Carli”.

SINTESI DEL PERCORSO SCIENTIFICO E PROFESSIONALE
Gli interessi di ricerca di Paolo Depaoli, maturati nel corso del tempo in imprese private e ulteriormente precisati in ambito universitario, concernono le problematiche organizzative inerenti ai processi innovativi, come testimoniano sia le attività svolte che le pubblicazioni allegate. In tale ambito, l'intreccio tra il cambiamento /apprendimento organizzativo e le tecnologie è stato indagato in occasione delle ricerche sia sui sistemi informativi che sulle tecnologie in corso di sviluppo per mitigare gli effetti del cambiamento climatico.
In sintesi, l'integrazione dell'attività universitaria, incentrata sugli approfondimenti teorici e metodologici, con la ricerca-intervento organizzativa effettuata nell'ambito di società priva-te, lo hanno portato sia a contribuire a volumi collettanei, a conferenze internazionali e a pubblicazioni su riviste italiane e internazionali che a sviluppare la propria attività di do-cenza unendo agli aspetti teorici le esemplificazioni tratte dall'esperienza maturata nel lavoro sul campo.
Di seguito si riportano le principali attività che esemplificano il lavoro svolto ed evidenziano l’intreccio ‘organizzazione-innovazione' quale filo conduttore del percorso intellettuale e professionale sviluppato.
1. ATTIVITA’ DI RICERCA
A. Dal 2008 è collaboratore del Centro di Ricerca sui Sistemi Informativi (CeRSI) della LUISS "Guido Carli".
Oltre alle attività di docenza sull'apprendimento organizzativo di cui si dirà al punto suc-cessivo relativo alle 'attività didattiche', nell'ambito di questa collaborazione si colloca l'in-terazione con la comunità internazionale di ricercatori che indagano le tematiche relative all'organizzazione e ai sistemi informativi. Questi alcuni esempi delle attività svolte:
- associate editor della track "Global and Cultural Issues in Information Systems", In-ternational Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 2013);
- reviewer (2011) per il Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS);
- co-responsabile nell'ambito del X Workshop dei docenti e dei ricercatori universitari di Organizzazione Aziendale (Università degli Studi di Cagliari 2009) della track: "The Philosophical Roots of Organization Studies and Organizational Practice: Epi-stemologies, Methodologies, and Approaches";
- referee per i lavori presentati a conferenze internazionali quali, ad esempio, la Euro-pean Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) del 2007, la International Conferen-ce on Information Systems (ICIS) del 2008, alla Mediterranean Conference on Infor-mation Systems (MCIS) del 2009 e del 2010;
- responsabile, o co-responsabile, di aree tematiche di conferenze internazionali, ad esempio: quella sull'"Innovation management" della nona conferenza sull'e-business (2010, Wuhan, Cina) o quella sugli "Interdisciplinary and emerging IS research the-mes" di MCIS 2010 (Tel Aviv, Israele) oppure ancora quella sulle problematiche in-formative delle piccole e medie imprese nell'ambito di itAIS 2010 ("ICT-IS as enablig technologies for the development of small and medium size enterprises"). Per itAIS 2011 è stato co-responsabile dell'area tematica "Blending Design and Behavioural Research in Information Systems" e per itAIS 2012 e 2013 della track "Design re-search in Information Systems".
B. (2007-2012) Attività di ricerca presso l'Università degli Studi di Urbino "Carlo Bo":
B1 - DiSTeVA, Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, della Vita e dell'Ambiente (16/12/2010 - 16/06/2012). Contratto individuale per la conduzione di attività di ricerca nel campo dell’organizzazione nell'ambito del progetto "Monitoraggio degli impegni e delle azioni previste nell'ambito della Bali Roadmap". Il campo di indagine specifico ha riguardato l'identificazione e la valutazione delle possibili azioni e politiche di coordinamento e controllo nei settori delle energie rinnovabili, dell'efficienza energetica e del trasferimento di tecnologie, con particolare riferimento alle piccole e medie imprese. Questo studio ha de-lineato le possibili strategie di supporto all'innovazione basate sulle caratteristiche organiz-zative e gestionali dei distretti industriali italiani.
B2 - A partire dal 2007, ha svolto attività di ricerca nell'ambito, prima, del Centro per le Valutazioni Ambientali delle Attività Industriali e, successivamente, del Dipartimento di Scienze dell'Uomo dell'Ambiente e della Natura (ora DiSTeVA), studiando le implicazioni organizzative per le imprese conseguenti all’attuazione di due convenzioni internazionali:
a) indagine sul rapporto organizzazione/tecnologie a seguito dell’attuazione della con-venzione di Stoccolma sugli inquinanti organici persistenti (POP). I casi studiati han-no portato all’elaborazione di due rapporti di ricerca: (i)"Criteri per l'individuazione di buone pratiche nell'ambito della termovalorizzazione Report 2008"; (ii)"Linee guida per il monitoraggio dei POP. Buone pratiche di apprendimento organizzativo nell'ambito della termovalorizzazione Report 2009";
b) attuazione del protocollo di Kyoto e delle politiche europee in materia di protezione del clima, delle fonti rinnovabili di energia e di efficienza energetica; su questi temi studia l'interazione tra policy making e attori coinvolti (con particolare riferimento alle piccole e medie imprese) individuando possibili corsi di azione. E' autore dei seguenti rapporti di ricerca: (i) "Individuazione delle problematiche trasversali nella promozione delle politiche italiane: come favorire comportamenti innovativi nelle parti coinvolte: processi di consultazione e sistemi volontari di gestione ambientale - Report 2007"; (ii)"Risparmio energetico. Su cosa puntare l'attenzione: ostacoli, difficoltà, soluzioni organizzative possibili Report 2007"; (iii) "Fonti rinnovabili ed energia elettrica: profili e politiche - Report 2008".
C. Attività condotte nell’ambito del Centro di Formazione delle Banche Popolari Italiane (Cefor-Euros).
Tali attività sono esemplificate da due ricerche-intervento progettate e realizzate tra il 1999 e il 2001. La prima riguarda il cambiamento organizzativo per promuovere le capacità in-novative di una società consortile di outsourcing di sistemi informativi in ambito bancario; la seconda è relativa all'elaborazione dei metodi e degli strumenti organizzativi per proget-tare e realizzare un centro di competenza di una società italiana leader nella fornitura di si-stemi informativi per l'area finanza delle banche: il punto chiave, sotto il profilo teorico e
metodologico, riguardava l'apprendimento organizzativo in un ambiente collocato all'incro-cio tra due fenomeni a innovazione continua: l'ICT e le finanza.
D. Attività condotte nell’ambito di ARPES srl - Analisi Ricerche Piani Economici e Socia-li.
Due progetti hanno carattere emblematico.
D1. Nella prima metà degli anni ottanta, la Dublin Foundation for the Improvement of the Living and Working Conditions (un organismo paritetico tra imprese, sindacati e governi della Commissione Europea) promosse la ricerca "Il ruolo delle parti coinvolte nel processo di introduzione delle nuove tecnologie" con l'intento di capire in che modo e misura l'ado-zione delle ICT aveva e avrebbe influito sui comportamenti degli attori interessati (direzioni aziendali, organizzazioni sin-dacali, lavoratori) e sulle loro interazioni. La ricerca, diretta da chi scrive, prevedeva il coordinamento di più gruppi di ricercatori di diversi paesi (Da-nimarca, Germania, Irlanda, Italia, Olanda, Regno Unito) ed iniziò con la classificazione delle tecnologie e dei loro impatti effettuata con la consulenza scientifica di Claudio Cibor-ra. Nella fase successiva vennero esaminati 64 casi in Europa per individuare le strategie delle imprese nei confronti delle ICT e l'atteggiamento dei sindacati sulla questione. I risul-tati delle indagini vennero presentati e discussi da chi scrive nel corso di seminari per la ve-rifica dei risultati in Italia e in Europa. Il rapporto di sintesi è stato pubblicato dalla Fonda-zione europea nel 1987 con il titolo "Partecipazione nel cambiamento tecnologico".
D2. Nel corso del 1986 e del 1987 ha diretto la ricerca finanziata dal Formez "Processi di genesi di nuova imprenditorialità nel Mezzogiorno" con l’obiettivo di indagare la natura e l'origine di questi fenomeni per valutarne la persistenza e le probabilità di estensione all'in-sieme delle aree meridionali, oltre a definire - date le finalità istituzionali del Formez - quali strategie di coordinamento sarebbero state più opportune per favorire e sostenere i processi virtuosi. L'individuazione dei fattori significativi venne effettuata attraverso le seguenti at-tività: (i) ipotizzare in prima approssimazione una serie di fattori critici; (ii) definire alcune aree territoriali e ricostruirne lo sviluppo per comprendere la validità e la completezza dei fattori ipotizzati; (iii) individuare un campione di imprese per ogni area e capire il ruolo esercitato sia dai fattori a livello locale (ovvero gli scambi tra l'impresa e il contesto), sia dal-la figura dell'imprenditore; (iv) identificare gli eventuali contesti-tipo caratterizzati da fattori comuni. Il lavoro – con la supervisione scientifica dei professori Alberto Martinelli, Pippo Ranci, Gianfranco Viesti e Nando Dalla Chiesa) – è durato diversi mesi nel corso dei quali sono state effettuate le analisi di sei aree territoriali e condotte le interviste a novanta imprenditori. Il lavoro è stato pubblicato nel 1989 nella collana Ricerche e Studi Formez con il titolo "I nuovi imprenditori nel Mezzogiorno".
2. ATTIVITA’ NELLA DIDATTICA

Titolare del corso "Change management e apprendi-mento organizzativo" presso la Facoltà di scienze politiche nell'ambito del Corso di laurea triennale in Management pubblico e del Corso di laurea magistrale Amministrazioni e poli-tiche pubbliche (a partire dall’AA 2011/'12 ).
B. LUISS "Guido Carli".
 A partire dall’a.a. 2014/2015, titolare di contratto integrativo per la docenza “Orga-nizational, social, and ethical implications of information systems” del corso in in-glese “Legal aspects of ICTs” del corso di laurea di Giurisprudenza.
 Titolare di contratto integrativo di Organizzazione aziendale presso la Facoltà di economia (AA 2010/'11).
 Cultore della materia presso il Master's Degree Program, Department of Business and Management, Course in General Management. Materia: Business Organization and Human Resources (Graduate Studies, AY 2011/'12).
 Docente unico del modulo "Apprendimento organizzativo e organizzazione azienda-le" (20 ore) e del seminario "Gestione del cambiamento" nell'ambito del corso per "Esperti di gestione collaborativa e multiaziendale di processi supply chain" (2008) organizzato dal Centro Ricerche sui Sistemi Informativi (CeRSI) nell’ambito di un progetto europeo.
C. Università degli studi di Urbino "Carlo Bo" (da AA 2006/'07 a AA 2008/'09). Titolare di contratto integrativo a contratto per la docenza "Sistemi di gestione ambientale" dell'inse-gnamento di "Valutazione di impatto ambientale" del corso di laurea in Scienze e Tecnolo-gie dell'Università degli Studi di Urbino "Carlo Bo". Il corso, rivolto a studenti sia del triennio che della "magistrale", era incentrato sul rapporto tra l'organizzazione complessiva di un'impresa e quella specifica volta a gestire le problematiche ambientali.
D. Altre attività didattiche:
- Dipartimento di Ricerca Sociale dell'Università degli Studi di Trento (Maggio 2007) e Centro Ricerche sui Sistemi Informativi (CeRSI) della LUISS "Guido Carli" (Ottobre 2007). Conduce due seminari sull'apporto della filosofia alla disciplina dei sistemi informativi illustrando e discutendo l'influsso di Martin Heidegger.
- Mediterranean Conference on Information Systems del 2007. Conduce il workshop "Claudio Ciborra compared: philosophy, natural science, and social science in the in-formation systems field".

ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Paolo Depaoli was born in 1948 in Turin, Italy, attended high school in the United States of America before continuing his studies in Italy and has an excellent command of written and spoken English.
His academic and professional experience as a researcher and lecturer in organizational and innovation processes straddles both the private sector and the university campus.
In the last ten years Paolo Depaoli’s key research interests have been concerning the or-ganizational aspects of information systems and the developing technologies that aim to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change; in particular he has studied the com-bined effects of change/organizational learning and technology.
The theoretical and methodological studies conducted as part of his university activities and the organization action research carried out in the private sector have seen Mr. De-paoli contribute and co-author collective books, papers for international conference and articles published in the Italian and international journals, as attested by the list of publi-cations in the Appendix to this resume.
Paolo Depaoli has developed a teaching approach that achieves a good balance of theory and concrete practical application.

Mr. Depaoli joined CeRSI, the information systems research centre of LUISS, as a research fellow in 2008, a role he carries out in parallel to teaching the subject of Organizational Learning (more details under ’Teaching Activities’, below). As a member of the interna-tional research community that studies the organization and information systems, he has been:

Individual organization research contract for the ‘Monitoraggio degli impegni e delle azioni previste nell'ambito della Bali Roadmap’ (‘Monitoring of the Bali roadmap undertakings and actions’) project. Study of the identification and evaluation of coordination and control actions and policies in the renewable energy sector, energy effi-ciency and the transfer of technologies with a special focus on small and medium enterprises. The study suggested potential innovation- support strategies based on the organizational and operating traits of Italian industrial districts.

2007-2012. Centro per le Valutazioni Ambientali delle Attività Industriali (Centre for the Evaluation of the Impact of Industrial Activities on the Environment) then renamed the Dipartimento di Scienze dell'Uomo dell'Ambiente e della Natura (Department of Sciences for Man, the Environment and Nature or ‘DiSTeVA’).
Research and study of the organizational implications for businesses of the implementa-tion of two international conventions:
a) study of the relationship between organization and technology following the appli-cation of the Stockholm POP (persistent organic pollutants) convention. The cases studied enabled the development of two research reports: i) ‘Criteri per l'individua-zione di buone pratiche nell'ambito della termovalorizzazione Report 2008’ (Criteria for Identifying Good Heat-to-energy Practices Report 2008); ii) ‘Linee guida per il monitoraggio dei POP. Buone pratiche di apprendimento organizzativo nell'ambito della termovalorizzazione Report 2009" (Guidelines for Monitoring POP. Organiza-tional Learning Good Practices in the Heat-to-Energy Sector);
b) study of the interaction between policy making and the relevant stakeholders (es-pecially small and medium enterprises) to identify potential courses of action as a result of the Kyoto Protocol and the European policies on climate protection, re-newable energy and efficient energy. Author of the following research reports: i) ‘Individuazione delle problematiche trasversali nella promozione delle politiche ital-iane: come favorire comportamenti innovativi nelle parti coinvolte: processi di con-sultazione e sistemi volontari di gestione ambientale - Report 2007’ (Identification of Transversal Issues in Promoting Italian Policies: How to spur innovative behaviour in the actors involved: consultation processes and voluntary environmental manage-ment - Report 2007); ii) ‘Risparmio energetico. Su cosa puntare l'attenzione: ostacoli, difficoltà, soluzioni organizzative possibili Report 2007’ (Energy Saving. What to Focus on: obstacles, difficulties and potential organizational solutions - Re-port 2007); and iii) ‘Fonti rinnovabili ed energia elettrica: profili e politiche - Report 2008’ (Renewable Sources and Electric Power: Profiles and policies – Report 2008).
Cefor-Euros SpA - Centro di Formazione delle Banche Popolari Italiane
Two action research projects designed and implemented in 1999-2001 exemplify the re-search activities conducted by Mr. Depaoli for Cefor-Euros, the Banche Popolari Italiane Learning Centre. The first was on organizational change to promote the innovation poten-tial of a consortium company to which banks outsource their information systems. The second concerned the development of organizational methods and tools to design and set up a centre of competences for an Italian company leader in the supply of information systems to the finance departments of banks and banking groups. The main point here in terms of theory and method was to apply organizational learning to ICT and finance, seen as a crossroad of ongoing innovation.
Both projects were articulated, complex, of long term duration and each is the object of a case study presented and discussed during Mr. Depaoli’s university courses on Change Management and Organizational Learning. An overview of the methodologies adopted and the key results of the organizations was published in Depaoli P., D’Atri A., De Marco M. (2011)“Innovating IS management by enhancing Knowledge Intensive Service Activities (KISA): two case studies in the banking sector”, Int. J. Networking and Virtual Organisa-tions, Vol. 8, Nos. 3/4.
ARPES srl - Analisi Ricerche Piani Economici e Sociali
Two projects are emblematic of the research work done by Mr. Depaoli for ARPES, a com-pany that specializes in the analysis of economic and social planning research.
The first project is dated mid-1980s when the Dublin Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (a partnership between business, trade unions and the governments of the European Commission) implemented ‘The role of the parties involved in the introduction of the new information’, a research project aimed at deepening our understanding of how and in what measure ICT take-up can influence the behaviours and interactions of the relevant actors (corporate management, trade unions, workers). As the project’s research director, Mr. Depaoli was responsible for coordinating several research groups from different countries (Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Holland and the United Kingdom); the project started with the classification of the technologies and their impacts, drawing on the collaboration of the renowned scholar Claudio Ciborra. The next phase consisted of analyzing 64 European cases to identify the ICT strategies used by the busi-nesses and the behavioural responses of the trade unions. The results of the study were presented and discussed by Mr. Depaoli at the seminars held in Italy and Europe and the highlights published in the ‘Participation in Technological Change’ report published by the European Foundation in 1987.
The second research project ‘Processi di genesi di nuova imprenditorialità nel Mezzogior-no’ (The processes of the genesis of new entrepreneurship in the Italian Mezzogiorno) took place in 1986-1987 and was funded by Formez. The aim was to investigate the nature and origin of these processes to evaluate the persistency and the probability of its extension to the whole of Southern Italy and to define, in line with Formez’s institutional mission, the best coordination strategies to introduce and support virtuous processes. The most significant factors were identified by: i) first hypothesizing several potentially critical factors; ii) defining the local areas and reconstructing their development in order to un-derstand the validity and completeness of the assumptions; iii) identifying a sample of companies from each area and understanding the role played by both local factors (i.e., the exchanges between businesses and community) and the entrepreneurs; and iv) pin-pointing any similar types of context with the same critical factors. The research was car-ried out over several months and involved analyzing six local areas and interviewing 90 entrepreneurs; the study was supervised by Professors Alberto Martinelli, Pippo Ranci, Gianfranco Viesti and Nando Dalla Chiesa and the results published in 1989 in a report en-titled ‘I nuovi imprenditori nel Mezzogiorno’ (‘Southern Italy’s New Entrepreneurs’), part of the ‘Ricerche e Studi Formez’ series.

1976-1981 Mr. Depaoli founded ‘Intercoop Language School - ex Insegnanti Berlitz scrl’ in Rome in 1976 to absorb the business of Berlitz Italia SpA when the parent company decided to exit the Italian market. Himself a former Berlitz English teacher (1973-74), the management strategy implemented by Mr. Depaoli enabled the company to flourish and expand, leading companies such as ENI, Alitalia and Merck Sharp & Dome to select it to issue their staff language courses; by year two, the school employed 35 fulltime teachers, mostly partners, and had already reached break-even point.
