Research activity
I have been involved in the study of different aspects of NK cell biology since 1988. The main research fields are: 1. the intracellular signalling pathways triggered by several surface receptors (including adhesion receptors (beta 1 integrins), lectin-type receptors (CD69), and prototype NK triggering receptors (CD16), and of their crosstalk with the signalling pathways initiated by inhibitory receptors (CD94/NKG2A), in the regulation of NK cell cytotoxic function; 2. the role exerted by several innate immunity receptors in regulating abundance and effector functions of diverse lymphocyte populations in immune-mediated disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract (Inflammatory Bowel Diseases – IBD; celiac disease); 3. the role of innate immunity receptors and effector mechanisms in cancer patients and experimental models. In particular, we have characterized the dynamics of NK cell phenotype and functional capability in DLBCL patients, before and after chemoimmunotherapy regimen. Moreover, we have contributed to the study of the NK cell compartment in patients with pancreas tumor, before and after surgery. Finally, we have characterized the capability of chemically-modified therapeutic monoclonal antibodies to trigger NK cell activation, and have participated to the characterization of the functional activity of a CD16-based chimeric antigen receptor. Present research interests are focused on the molecular and cellular characterization of specialized NK subsets, such as HCMV-driven memory (adaptive) NK cells, and on the exploitation of their anti-tumor and anti-pathogen functions, in a therapeutical perspective.
I have been recipient of research funds, obtained by different State agencies (CNR and MIUR); I have been Responsible of Research Unit and/or National Coordinator for PRIN projects. I am member of the Society for Natural Immunity, and of the Italian Society for Immunology, Clinical Immunology and Allergology (SIICA), and perform referee activity for international journals in the Immunology field. I am holding a coordinator role of didactic and research activities for the Medical School and for PhD Course. I am author of more than 59 scientific publications on internationally ranked journals (see the institutional repository: IRIS Sapienza, pubblicazioni Gabriella Palmieri).
