Curriculum

Enrico De Santis is a researcher and university lecturer in Computational Intelligence and Pattern Recognition at the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications (DIET), Sapienza University of Rome. His work spans both theoretical and applied aspects of AI and Complex Systems modelling, focusing on neural and fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, Clustering, Transformer architectures and their application to the green transition, Renewable Energy Communities and predictive maintenance. He is also active in Natural Language Processing and generation, with also a special interest in the epistemological and philosophical dimensions of science, language and cognition.
He holds a Ph.D. in Information and Communication Engineering at Sapienza, with a dissertation on Computational Intelligence in Complex Systems with applications to Smart Grids and has authored over 50 scientific publications in distinguished international journals and conferences on AI, pattern recognition, NLP and Smart Grids. His academic teaching includes courses in Pattern Recognition, Computational Intelligence, Circuit Theory, and a doctoral course on the Philosophy of Science and Meta-Design.
Enrico De Santis has significant international experience, having worked as a research assistant and post-doctoral fellow at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, from 2013 to 2017. During this period, he contributed to several interdisciplinary projects in Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing and Educational Data Mining. He collaborated with public and private partners within the framework of the Brain Alliance Canada initiative and was involved in the design of AI strategies to enhance learning environments. His stay in Canada also included mentoring master's and PhD students and delivering academic seminars.
He is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of the innovative startup Sapienza TensorLoops srl, focused on AI, digital transition, and natural language processing. He has led and contributed to several national and European research projects, including collaborations with Ferrari, Areti, and PNRR initiatives. His current interests include complex systems modelling, explainable AI, hybrid physics-data models and the intersection of AI, cognition and philosophy.
In 2022, he published the book "Umanità, Complessità, Intelligenza Artificiale. Un connubio perfetto" (Aracne), a multidisciplinary exploration of the relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. In 2023, he also published the essay "Apocalissi digitali e alchimie artificiali: il linguaggio nell’epoca della sua riproducibilità tecnica" in the renowned cultural journal Prometeo (Mondadori), addressing the philosophical implications of artificial language generation and technological impacts in the digital age.
