Curriculum
Profilo scientifico sintetico
Full Professor of Architettura Tecnica. President of AIPAI and National Representative for Italy at TICCIH.
An engineer with a PhD in Building Engineering-Architecture, he carries out teaching, research, and third mission activities within the scientific-disciplinary sector of Architectural Technology (now CEAR-08/A), part of the academic field for Design and Technological Planning in Architecture (now GSD disciplinary sector 08/CEAR-08: Design, Architectural Technology, Technical Architecture, and Built Environment Management).
From graduation until 2011, he conducted research at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning for Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome, participated in the PhD program in Building Engineering-Architecture, and from 2004 to 2011, was involved as a research fellow and collaborator in institutional research groups funded by the University, Federated University Networks, former MURST, PRIN programs, and other research agreements related to SSD ICAR/10, coordinated by Professors Franco Storelli, Gianfranco Carrara, and Carlo Cecere.
Since 2008, he has served as adjunct professor at Sapienza, teaching the Master’s Degree Course in "Building Construction Engineering" – Rieti, with the course "Design for Building Renovation and Restoration" (SSD ICAR/10 since 2008), and the Bachelor’s Degree Course in "Engineering for Building and the Territory" – Rieti, with the course "Technical Architecture II" (SSD ICAR/10 since 2009).
In 2011, he was appointed as a university researcher at the Department of Civil, Building, and Environmental Engineering at the same university. From that year onward, he has continued teaching in structured roles in the degree programs "Building Construction and Environmental Systems Engineering" – Rieti, and "Building Engineering-Architecture U.E." – Rome (2012–present), while also initiating and coordinating institutional and contracted research groups from the first year [see Section VI].
From that same period, he was appointed as the Academic-Scientific Coordinator of the Second-Level Master’s Degree Program in "Architectural Design for the Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings and Public Spaces" – PARES, Faculty of Architecture (2011–2017, directed by Prof. Toppetti), and became affiliated with Sapienza's CRITEVAT – Rieti Research Center for Engineering in the Protection and Enhancement of the Environment and Territory, where he later joined the Steering Committee as DICEA representative (2015–present).
Initially through CRITEVAT and later through DICEA, he also launched third mission initiatives in collaboration with institutions (State Archives of Rieti, Lazio Archival Superintendency, Municipalities of Rome, Poggio Moiano, Fiamignano, etc.) and industrial partners. Over time, these efforts led to his appointment as scientific coordinator for Research Organizations representing Sapienza (CRITEVAT or DICEA) in partnership projects (POR FESR Lazio Region, Ministry of Economic Development, PON programs).
He is a member of the Doctoral Committee in Architecture and Urban Engineering (2011–present), where he contributes to teaching, PhD thesis supervision, serves on the board and various internal committees, and has acted as Secretary (2011–2018) and Coordinator of the Building Engineering-Architecture Curriculum (2018).
From 2011 to 2015, he worked as a university researcher, and from 2015 to the present, he has served as an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil, Building, and Environmental Engineering, teaching in several degree programs (LM4 c.u., LM24, and L23).
He holds elected positions on academic governing bodies and delegation roles for the ICI Faculty and DICEA Department.
His scientific career and primary research lines are rooted in the field of Architectural Technology, focusing on the characteristics of historic construction and their relationship to the architectural organism’s qualities. In particular, these topics are addressed through the development of cultural, technical, and digital methodologies and tools to update the processes of implementation and control of restoration interventions, and to critically analyze, document, and transform the built environment.
His approach consistently reflects the disciplinary sector’s themes, highlighting the overlaps and intersections between architecture and engineering, especially in light of digital innovation.
His preferred research fields include modern architecture, industrial archaeological heritage, and minor historic architecture, linked both to collective memory and the need to address post-industrial building and environmental challenges.
In these areas, he is a member of the national ICOMOS committees for Area 4, ISC20C (20th Century), and ISCIH (Industrial Heritage), and is President of the Italian Association for Industrial Archaeological Heritage (TICCIH Italy), which brings together scholars addressing the multifaceted post-industrial issue, fostering effective synergies among perspectives from Architectural Technology, Architectural Technology Design, Economic History, Urban Planning, and Architectural Restoration.
He is also President of the General Assembly on Industrial Heritage and promoter of Pia 2024 – Patrimonio Industrial Argentino as part of Italian-Argentine cooperation.
He is also involved in:
Research networks and public engagement: industrial archaeology contact for Ro.Me Museum Exhibition; member of Re.Mi./Mining Network committee; National Mining Day committee; affiliated with ICOMOS, ArTec/Scientific Society for Architectural Technology, TICCIH/The International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage, and AIPAI [see Section V]; responsible for agreements with cultural institutions (Ministry of Culture, General Secretariat, Istituto VaVe, Lazio Archival Superintendency, Rieti State Archives, etc.) and local governments (Rome Capital, Municipalities I and XII, Province of Foggia, Poggio Moiano, Narni, Fiamignano, Marino, etc.).
International research collaborations, developed over the years with colleagues from Southeast University of Nanjing (School of Architecture, Department of Landscape Architecture – Profs. Yuning Cheng and Conghui Zhou), University of Évora (Prof. Ana Cardoso De Matos), and the Department of Architectural History, Theory and Composition at the School of Architecture of Seville (Spain – Prof. Enrique Larive López), as part of the “De Ora a Labora” group.
International educational networks: Sapienza contact for the Erasmus Mundus Master Degree in “Techniques, Heritage, and Territories of Industry” (Universities of Paris-Sorbonne, Padua, Évora); Sapienza lead for the Erasmus+ European Center of Vocational Excellence “SECOVE” (University of West Attica/EL, Sapienza University of Rome/IT, Technical University of Košice/SK, Public Higher Education P.PORTO/PT, Politeknika Txorierri of San Sebastian/ES).
He is Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Patrimonio Industriale and serves on several editorial scientific committees.
His research outputs include over 170 scientific publications, such as monographs, book chapters, journal articles, edited volumes, and forewords. These have been presented, with peer-reviewed or double-blind reviewed publications, at international conferences [see Section VIII.B].
His consistent and intensive teaching and research training activity is also demonstrated by the supervision of over 200 theses across various degree programs, and his role as supervisor/tutor for 15 doctoral theses since the 27th PhD cycle.
